Communications Intern: Friends of the Rappahannock
Location: 3219 Fall Hill Drive, Fredericksburg, VA.
Schedule: Approximately 5 hours per week.
Duration: Fall semester (flexible start/end dates).
Compensation: Stipend available.
About Us: Friends of the Rappahannock (FOR) is the voice and active force for a healthy and scenic Rappahannock River. Through advocacy, restoration, and education, we work to protect the river from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Chesapeake Bay.
Position Overview: FOR is seeking a Communications Intern to support our outreach and communication team. This role is ideal for someone seeking hands-on experience in nonprofit communications while building a strong portfolio. The intern will focus on developing evergreen content and supporting ongoing social media and communications needs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Draft, schedule, and manage social media content across platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Threads, LinkedIn)
- Develop evergreen content, including blogs, email newsletters, and website updates.
- Capture and organize photos and videos from programs, events, and fieldwork.
- Support storytelling by highlighting FOR programs, staff, volunteers, and community impact
- Assist with communications for events, campaigns, and seasonal initiatives
- Help maintain a consistent voice and brand across all platforms
- Track engagement and assist with basic analytics and reporting
- Occasional Outreach Event participation
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong writing and editing skills with attention to detail
- Interest in communications, marketing, environmental conservation, and community engagement
- Experience with Canva, Google Suite, and/or Mailchimp
- Familiarity with social media platforms and current trends
- Basic photography and/or video skills
- Ability to manage time effectively and work both independently and collaboratively
