The Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division is seeking computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, and related majors for potential student internship and entry-level civilian opportunities. Our software professionals develop and support applications connected to real-world Navy systems, including radar, sensors, combat systems, weapons, autonomous platforms, cybersecurity environments, and modeling and simulation tools.

Depending on your placement, you could write code, test software in a laboratory, analyze system performance, troubleshoot software and hardware interactions, or help develop new capabilities from prototype through operational use.

Potential responsibilities may include:

  • Designing, developing, testing, and maintaining software
  • Developing applications using languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, or Python
  • Supporting embedded, real-time, distributed, or Windows/Linux-based systems
  • Developing software for radar, sensors, weapon control, mission planning, or autonomous systems
  • Creating modeling, simulation, and data-analysis tools
  • Supporting artificial intelligence and machine-learning applications
  • Developing automated software tests and DevSecOps processes
  • Troubleshooting software, hardware, and system-interface issues
  • Evaluating software performance and documenting technical results
  • Collaborating with engineers, scientists, analysts, and fleet stakeholders

  • Data Science
  • Applied Mathematics or related fields with substantial programming experience

Helpful experience may include personal, academic, or professional projects involving C/C++, C#, Java, Python, MATLAB, Linux, Git, algorithms, data structures, databases, networking, cloud computing, embedded systems, artificial intelligence, or software testing.

Basic eligibility:

  • Current student or recent graduate in a relevant degree program
  • Foundational knowledge of programming and software-development principles
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate on multidisciplinary technical teams
  • U.S. citizenship
  • Ability to obtain and maintain the security clearance required for the position
