PR & Communications Intern

Unpaid Internship | Remote | International Nonprofit | Performance-Based Bonus Opportunities

About Womafreesm

The World Organization of Women Nations Womafreesm is a US-registered 501(c)(3) public charity building international infrastructure to make women’s experiences, economic contribution, expertise and systemic exclusion more visible, measurable and actionable.

Our work is developing across three interconnected areas:

Evidence Data — international research, data, indices and audits designed to identify systemic gaps affecting women and translate them into measurable evidence.

Legal Rapid Response — development of pathways, procedures and institutional mechanisms that can help turn documented systemic problems into appropriate legal and institutional responses.

International Infrastructure — building a global network of partnerships, regional structures, professional communities and institutional relationships capable of transforming evidence into long-term change.

One of our current major initiatives is an international comparative research programme examining the systematic misclassification and undervaluation of women aged 45–64 in market, recruitment and AI systems, with work spanning multiple countries.

We are now strengthening our international communications and public-relations capacity and are looking for a PR & Communications Intern to join this work.

About the Role

This internship is designed for a student or recent graduate who wants hands-on experience in public relations, media relations, research communications and international nonprofit communications.

You will work with a growing international organisation at a stage where its communications infrastructure, media relationships and global visibility are actively being developed.

This is not simply a social-media posting role.

You will help us identify the right audiences, build relationships with journalists and media organisations, distribute evidence-based stories and research materials, and strengthen Womafreesm’s visibility within the international nonprofit, research, women’s rights, technology and institutional ecosystems.

What You Will Do

You may contribute to:

  • Researching relevant journalists, editors, publications, podcasts, newsletters and media platforms across different countries.
  • Building and maintaining structured media and journalist databases.
  • Identifying media opportunities related to women’s economic participation, gender and age bias, AI, employment, research and systemic inequality.
  • Supporting the preparation and distribution of press releases, media briefs, research announcements and expert commentary.
  • Conducting targeted outreach to journalists, editors and relevant media organisations.
  • Supporting communications around Womafreesm’s international research programmes and institutional initiatives.
  • Identifying opportunities for interviews, expert commentary, guest articles, podcasts and collaborative publications.
  • Researching university media, professional associations, think tanks, nonprofit networks and specialist publications relevant to our work.
  • Supporting the development of relationships with media and communications partners.
  • Tracking outreach, responses, publications and media coverage.
  • Monitoring relevant conversations and identifying timely PR opportunities.
  • Supporting the preparation of regular communications and media-performance reports.

Depending on your interests and experience, you may also contribute to international communications strategy, research storytelling, LinkedIn communications, partnership communications or specific country-level campaigns.

What We Are Looking For

We are particularly interested in candidates who are:

  • Students or recent graduates in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Media, Marketing, International Relations, Social Sciences or related disciplines.
  • Strong written communicators in English.
  • Comfortable conducting online research and identifying relevant people and organisations.
  • Organised and able to maintain structured contact and outreach databases.
  • Curious about how media relationships are actually built.
  • Interested in women’s economic participation, social impact, technology, AI, research or international nonprofit work.
  • Proactive and comfortable working in a developing international organisation where initiative matters.
  • Able to work independently in a remote environment.

Additional languages are highly valued because of the international nature of our work.

What You Will Gain

This internship is intended to provide real professional experience rather than simulated internship assignments.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Build practical experience in international PR and media relations.
  • Learn how media outreach is researched, structured and executed.
  • Work with real international research and nonprofit initiatives.
  • Develop experience communicating research and complex social issues to external audiences.
  • Build a portfolio of communications and PR work.
  • Gain exposure to international nonprofit operations, partnerships and institutional communications.
  • Work with colleagues and collaborators across different countries and professional backgrounds.
  • Receive a professional reference based on successful completion and contribution.

Strong interns may also be considered for expanded responsibilities or future opportunities as the organisation develops.

Performance & Development

We believe internship performance should be based on meaningful contribution rather than activity for activity’s sake.

Depending on the assigned workstream, indicators may include:

  • Relevant journalists and media contacts identified and qualified.
  • Quality of media databases developed.
  • Media outreach conducted.
  • Journalist and editor responses generated.
  • Interviews, mentions or publication opportunities secured.
  • Relevant communications partnerships identified.
  • Research or organisational materials successfully distributed.
  • Quality and consistency of reporting and follow-up.

The internship is unpaid. Where appropriate and agreed in advance, exceptional measurable results may qualify for performance-based bonuses.

Who This Internship Is Best For

This opportunity may be particularly valuable if you want to build a career in:

Public Relations · Communications · Journalism · Research Communications · Nonprofit Communications · International Organisations · Social Impact · Media Relations

You should enjoy researching people and organisations, communicating professionally and turning important work into stories that the right audiences will notice.

Please submit your CV/resume together with a short note explaining:

  1. Why this internship interests you.
  2. Which area of PR or communications you would most like to develop.
  3. Any relevant writing, media, university, volunteer or communications experience you already have.
