The MLA is expanding its range of membership offerings, including institutional memberships and a new undergraduate affiliate membership, and we’re seeking a creative and experienced marketing leader to help guide our outreach strategy. The senior manager, under the direction of the director of outreach, will be responsible for developing and executing innovative promotion strategies for MLA membership, services, publications, and events, including individual, departmental, and institutional membership; MLA Job List advertising; our multichannel publishing program; and our annual convention and other events. Guided by a deep knowledge of the humanities higher education landscape and of current marketing technology, the senior manager will create campaigns that expand the MLA’s reach, reinforce the association’s core values, and present a cohesive vision of the MLA’s offerings.
Responsibilities
- Conduct market research and develop marketing plans for MLA memberships (individual and institutional), services, publications, and events, with an eye toward cross-product marketing opportunities
- Lead member and constituent analysis to refine segmentation and messaging
- Stay up to date on changes in marketing technology and strategies to shape the MLA’s promotions and inform internal stakeholders
- Develop and write copy for campaigns, including emails, advertising, content marketing, and social media posts
- Oversee the MLA’s conference exhibits and sponsorships in support of the full range of MLA offerings
- Coordinate marketing efforts with external partners, publications contributors, and staff colleagues
- Manage marketing expenses for the MLA International Bibliography
- Create, monitor, and refine Google ad campaigns, including Google Ad Grants ads
- In collaboration with outreach colleagues, develop data visualizations and other tracking mechanisms to evaluate and refine campaigns
Qualifications
- At least five years of full-time marketing experience, including digital marketing, branding, social media marketing, and print advertising, with at least two years’ experience building membership or other constituent engagement in an association or other nonprofit context
- Proven track record of developing strategic cross-product marketing campaigns and documenting results
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills, and judgment
- Experience driving constituent engagement and tracking success rates to present to senior-level organization stakeholders
- BA in a humanities field
- Ability to work collaboratively with outreach colleagues, product stakeholders, and outside partners
- Ability to collect, analyze, and synthesize data to make strategic decisions about association sales and marketing
- At least one year of experience with creating and refining Google ads
- Strong knowledge of other marketing and design strategies and tools, including search and answer engine optimization, Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager and Google Search Console, CRMs, InDesign, and Photoshop; knowledge of HTML and CSS desirable
- Experience with developing and managing complex budgets
This is a hybrid position, requiring regular in-person attendance at the MLA offices in downtown New York City. Candidates must be able to work legally in the United States. Salary is commensurate with experience and expected to be in the range of $95,000–$105,000. The MLA provides generous vacation and sick time, flexible work hours, a 403(b) retirement plan, and individual health and dental plans with no shared premium cost.
