Education Specialist

Position Title: Education Specialist

 

Position Reports To: Director of Education 

Position Description: Save The Bay is seeking a full time dedicated and passionate, environmental educator to join our team.  Save The Bay’s education program is a year round environmental education program that aims to connect students and people from all over the watershed to Narragansett Bay through hands-on mission based programming. We work with 15,000 (K-12) students annually through our school day and afterschool programming and an additional 5,000+ people through our public programs including our seal tours, lighthouse cruises and summer camps.  This position is an entry level position and is responsible for teaching, leading and developing education programs.  Instructional assignments are held in a variety of settings, including classrooms, field and coastal locations, on-board on our Coast Guard certified education vessels and at our education centers in Providence and Newport. Participants range from K-12 students, college students and adults.  Occasional weekend work is necessary. 

Responsibilities:

  • Participate as a core member of STB’s education team
  • Assist with development, implementation and revision of school day and afterschool programs in accordance with state standards
  • Teach school programs in a variety of settings including our Providence Bay Center, Hamilton Family Aquarium in Newport, aboard our education vessels, along shorelines, in classrooms throughout the Narragansett Bay watershed during the school day and afterschool
  • Teach and lead our public programs including BayCamps, seal tours and lighthouse tours
  • Maintain and handle education equipment including classroom materials, field equipment, boat equipment, etc.
  • Work in cooperation with other Save The Bay staff on a project basis.
  • Work with Director of Education to further existing contacts and develop new contacts with local and state educational institutions
  • Support Habitat, Development, and Advocacy staff to integrate broader Save The Bay initiatives into education programming.
  • Mentor and train seasonal staff, interns and volunteers members

 

Qualifications:

  • Comfortable teaching and leading students in a variety of settings including outdoors, in classrooms and aboard US Coast Guard certified education vessels
  • Knowledge of environmental, ecology and biology concepts preferred
  • Prior experience working with children 
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and efficiently complete varied tasks
  • Current First Aid/CPR and lifeguard certification preferred (will train the right candidate)
  • Ability to handle physical demands of field programming including working on boats in all four seasons
  • Available to work a varied schedule including weekends at certain times of year
  • BCI check required
  • Bilingual or spanish speaking is a plus
  • Ability to handle and work on small boats
  • This position requires random drug testing throughout the year
  • Flexible and creative team member
