Purpose

As the Shift Manager – Asset Management at APM Terminals, you are a shift-based leader responsible for ensuring the reliability, availability, and safe operation of critical terminal assets across the entire operation. You will coordinate maintenance activities in real time, lead technical response efforts during equipment breakdowns, and leverage maintenance systems and performance data to drive operational continuity and asset reliability.

In this role, you play a critical part in championing HSSE standards, technical excellence, and continuous improvement (Lean) principles, ensuring maintenance activities are executed safely, consistently, and effectively across all shifts—particularly during nights, weekends, and other off-peak periods when decisive leadership and cross-functional coordination are essential.

Key Responsibilities: 

• Act as the central focal point for coordinating all asset management and maintenance activities during assigned shifts, especially during nights and weekends 
• Monitor equipment performance and availability, ensuring timely response to breakdowns (BDs) and minimizing operational disruptions 
• Oversee and support maintenance execution teams in diagnosing and resolving technical issues, ensuring adherence to maintenance standards and best practices 
• Capture, analyze, and report discrepancies between Operations and Mechanical reporting related to equipment breakdowns and downtime 
• Review and validate maintenance data (e.g., failure trends, repeat defects, downtime analysis) to identify root causes and recommend corrective actions 
• Monitor and coordinate fuel deliveries and critical consumables during off-peak hours to ensure uninterrupted operations 
• Ensure compliance with all safety, technical, and operational standards, including LOTO and safe maintenance practices 
• Provide timely updates, technical insights, and escalation to the AM Execution Director and AM Planning Manager as required 
• Track shift performance against key indicators — equipment availability, breakdown response and resolution time (MTTR), repeat failure rate, Ops-vs-Mechanical reporting alignment, safety compliance, and data quality in IFS 

What We Are Looking For:

• A four-year bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial), Logistics, or a related technical field 
• 3–5 years of experience in terminal operations, maintenance, asset management, or heavy equipment environments, with hands-on experience in equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and reliability practices 
• A strong understanding of terminal equipment (RTGs, STSs, MHCs, or similar heavy assets) and maintenance processes, with experience in shift-based environments including nights and weekends 
• The ability to analyze technical and maintenance data (downtime, MTBF, MTTR, failure patterns) and translate insight into actionable improvements, with familiarity with CMMS/EAM systems (e.g., IFS) and maintenance planning; unionized-environment experience highly desirable 
• Excellent coordination and communication skills, a decisive problem-solving mindset under pressure, proficiency in MS Excel and data analysis tools, and flexibility to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required 
• Ability to obtain a TWIC card and Port Access Card 

Salary: $90,000 – $120,000 

Hours: Rotating Shift (12 hours)

Location: Elizabeth, NJ 

Due to peak periods may be required to work nights, holidays, and weekends as required. At times may be required to work significantly extended shift hours based on business needs.
