Innovation Research Fellow

PumpKin is seeking an Innovation Research Fellow to support clinical and translational research focused on human milk composition and infant nutrition. The position is supported by a grant through the New Jersey Department of Labor. Working under the mentorship of senior scientific leadership, the Fellow will design and execute research studies, analyze data, and contribute to product development efforts. This role offers the unique opportunity to work at an early-stage life sciences startup in the human milk and infant nutrition fields while receiving mentorship and gaining experience across both scientific research and commercialization.

 

Term:  Full-time; Up to 2 years (Jan 2027 - Dec 2029)

 

Qualifications

  1. PhD awarded within the last 12 months, or completion of dissertation with a planned defense within the next 6 months
  2. Strong background in relevant scientific discipline (e.g., molecular biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, microbiology, food science, human milk, or related field)
  3. Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research, analyze data, and communicate findings effectively
  4. Demonstrated ability and discipline to deliver structured problem-solving in a fast-paced startup environment
  5. Exceptional project management and organizational skills
  6. Proficiency in data management systems and statistical analysis software
  7. Strong publication record
  8. Familiarity with Institutional Review Board (IRB) processes and clinical research advantageous but not required
  9. Eligible to work in the United States as required by the Innovation Research Fellowship Program through the NJ Department of Labor
  10. Ability to work on-site 4-5 days a week at PumpKin's lab space, located at The HELIX in New Brunswick, NJ

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with senior leadership to design and conduct research supporting PumpKin's scientific and commercialization objectives, including research evaluating human milk composition, nutrient stability, storage conditions, and related maternal-infant health outcomes
  • Oversee the daily operations of research studies, including participant recruitment, enrollment, data collection and sample management in accordance with study protocols and quality standards
  • Manage IRB submissions, amendments, and regulatory documentation to ensure compliance with all human subjects research requirements
  • Serve as the primary liaison with research participants, academic collaborators and external research partners
  • Build and maintain relationships with community groups, parent organizations, health clinics, and advocacy partners to foster collaboration
  • Generate, analyze, and interpret experimental data 
  • Contribute to technical reports, publications, grant deliverables, and product development activities
  • Work independently and collaboratively with the PumpKin team to support company goals and achievement of milestones
