Technical Editor

Position Details

Insignia is seeking a full-time Technical Editor with 3 to 5 years of professional editing experience. Ideally, candidates will have experience supporting environmental consulting, engineering, planning, biological, or other technical consulting projects. This position is remote within the United States. Because Insignia's offices, project teams, and clients are primarily based in California, candidates should be available and responsive during Pacific Time business hours as needed to support collaboration and client deliverables. As a client service role supporting time sensitive technical deliverables, occasional flexibility to accommodate project deadlines, including technical reviews outside of standard business hours, may be required.

Job Description

  • Edit, proofread, and quality review technical reports, environmental documents, California Environmental Quality Act and National Environmental Policy Act documents, biological reports, proposals, memoranda, presentations, and client deliverables.
  • Ensure consistency, grammar, punctuation, readability, terminology, formatting, citations, references, tables, figures, and cross references.
  • Apply Insignia editorial standards, document templates, branding, style conventions, and quality control procedures to deliverables.
  • Collaborate with project managers, technical staff, and proposal teams to improve document clarity while preserving technical accuracy.
  • Prepare client-ready deliverables using advanced Microsoft Word formatting tools, including styles, templates, tables of contents, captions, section breaks, tracked revisions, and document comparison, as well as Adobe Acrobat accessibility tools.
  • Perform final quality assurance reviews before submittal to verify completeness, consistency, and formatting.
  • Prioritize multiple assignments simultaneously while meeting competing project deadlines.
  • Identify opportunities to improve editorial processes, templates, and document quality.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Technical Communications, Journalism, Communications, Environmental Studies, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional technical editing experience.
  • Experience editing scientific, engineering, environmental, planning, regulatory, or other technical documents is preferred.
  • Exceptional command of English grammar, punctuation, syntax, and style.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word, including styles, templates, tracked changes, compare documents, and formatting of complex reports.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a deadline-driven consulting environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with Adobe Acrobat Pro is required; Adobe InDesign experience is a plus.
