Corrections Officer

Corrections officers contribute to the public safety mission by providing for the safety and security of the public, staff, and inmates by ensuring effective and safe custody and control along with compliance with policy and procedure. Successfully accomplished through the use of evidence-based practices and principles that enhance effective communication strategies and role modeling as part of collaborative multi-disciplinary teams addressing inmate needs. Officers provide security over adult inmates at the institution and while in transport; supervise the daily activities of inmates while observing and recording their behavior and movement to ensure their safe and secure confinement.

 Duties / Responsibilities Essential / Marginal

5 Responds to instructions and feedback of supervisors in a constructive manner in order to improve personal performance. • Engages in constructive dialogue with supervisors. • Relates instructions and feedback of supervisors to personal knowledge, skills, and abilities. • Acknowledges and follows through on coaching and/or instruction related to performance correction, enhancement, and/or development. • Completes additional assignments and duties as assigned to ensure smooth operation of the work unit and agency.  

40 Provides for security, safety and sanitation of facility through the supervision, control and observation of inmates and others inside and outside of the facility. • Provides for security, safety, and sanitation of the facility. • Effectively supervises, controls, counts and observes inmates. • Works schedules, shifts, and posts as assigned. • Carries out all duties and responsibilities in accordance with supervisor instructions, written post orders, and divisional and institutional operating procedures. • Counts inmates in accordance with operating procedures and reports discrepancies immediately. • Inspects the physical aspects of the unit for security breaches and reports any potential breaches to Supervisor immediately. 

25 Delivers timely, relevant information and instructions to inmates, staff, supervisors, and other persons to maintain, secure, safe and sanitary conditions. • Demonstrates clear, effective, and purposeful oral and written communications. • Supports professional, considerate and consistent patterns of communication with inmates, staff, and other persons inside and outside of the facility.  

10 Completes all training and (re)certification requirements. • Complies with established policy and procedure to request and arrange for training participation. • Completes and complies with all training and certification requirements in accordance with State, DCJS and DOC mandates, and ACA standards.  

20 Documentation Documents activities, observations and interactions with inmates, staff, and the public in compliance with operating procedures. • Documents activities and observations. • Communicates effectively with inmates, staff and the public. • Completes forms, logbook entries, reports, and other written documentation in an accurate, timely, and factual manner. • Creates required documentation in accordance with supervisor instructions, written post orders, and divisional and institutional operating procedures.  

Knowledge Skills and Abilities: *

High School Diploma or a GED equivalent. Valid Driver’s License. Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend workplace policies and procedures and to prepare workplace reports and documentation. Ability to lawfully possess a firearm in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Ability to successfully complete all pre-employment requirements which include medical screening, background check and drug testing to include screening for marijuana use.

Additional Considerations:

Stable employment history, military or related criminal justice experience. Prefer individuals at least 21 years old (a waiver may be provided by the Unit Head for individuals 18-20 years old). Bi-lingual and Multi-lingual applicants are encouraged to apply.

Special Assignments:

Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification Required for Entry into Position: *

High School Diploma or a GED equivalent. Valid Driver’s License. 

Must live within a 50-mile radius of the Prison.
