About:
Shekar Krishnan is the NYC Council Member for District 25, Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, East Elmhurst, and Woodside, Queens, some of the most diverse immigrant communities in the world. Shekar is currently the Chair of the Council’s Committee on Oversight and Investigations, holding accountable anyone and anything that takes advantage of New Yorkers– prioritizing good government reforms, taking on greedy corporations and bad landlords, and rooting out government inefficiencies. In his previous term, Shekar served as the Chair of the Council’s Committee On Parks and Recreation, negotiating the highest budget ever for NYC Parks.
Job Overview:
As Senior Digital Director, you will be responsible for high level coordination of our Oversight and Investigations portfolio, with a special focus on transforming policy into digestible communications. You will manage our digital program across all platforms, including setting strategy, creating content, establishing relationships with new media. This is a senior role. You would report to the Chief of Staff and Council Member. The ideal candidate will possess a keen ability for project management, exceptional writing skills, a deep understanding of social media tools and programs, video production, and the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced and dynamic political environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Communications
- Develop and implement a comprehensive short and long-term communications strategy that supports the Council Member’s goals, policy initiatives, and public image.
- Review all created materials related to Oversight and Investigations to acquire a deep understanding of the content.
- Supply talking points and other briefing materials for the Council Member.
- Tailor materials for public-facing mass audience content.
- Content Creation:
- Create and manage social media content calendars in conjunction with District Staff
- Prepare and produce high-quality multimedia content including images, videos, infographics, and captions
- Work in cohesion with existing communications District Staff.
- Work with District Staff to create weekly newsletters by crafting a narrative summary of Oversight and Investigations accomplishments and compiling newsworthy hits and visuals.
- New Media Relations:
- Serve as the primary spokesperson for the Council Member, cultivating and maintaining relationships with new media outlets.
- Respond to new media inquiries and coordinate press conferences.
- Write press releases, statements, op-eds, and talking points.
- Proactively brainstorm and pitch stories to new media.
- Monitoring & Analytics:
- Track media coverage, public opinion, and the effectiveness of communication efforts. Use analytics to adjust strategies and improve outreach efforts.
- Have an up-to-date understanding of relevant city issues by monitoring key media outlets and social media accounts, using trends to inform our output.
- Develop and oversee a growth strategy for all social media accounts.
Administration
- Schedule meetings, set agendas, and take meeting notes during all meetings related to Oversight and Investigations.
- Create a plan to ensure prompt execution of action items and follow up as necessary.
- Staff the Council Member at events.
- Provide additional support to the Council Member and District Staff as needed, including but not limited to: constituent services and event staffing.
Qualifications:
- 4+ years of experience in communications, public relations, or content creation
- Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to tailor content for different audiences
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations
- Expertise in social media platforms, including strategy development, content creation, and analytics
- Ability to work under pressure, on the go, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, with strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Knowledge of city services, government processes, and community resources is a plus
- NYC Residency, or willingness to relocate within 90 days of employment
Salary and benefits:
- The salary for this position will be in the $75,000 to $85,000 range.
