About us; Gil Sewing Corp is a family-owned uniform and apparel manufacturer in Morton Grove, IL. We produce military, government, airline, corporate, and managed uniform programs through a mix of domestic manufacturing, sourcing, fulfillment, and technology-driven program management. We are looking for a summer intern who wants to build practical AI-powered tools for a real working factory — not theoretical school projects. You will work directly with company leadership to turn factory problems into small cloud apps, automations, dashboards, and AI workflows.
What you’ll work on: You will help prototype AI tools and lightweight apps for areas like:- Piece-rate and payroll workflow automation- Production tracking and operator output dashboards- Checking work tickets, bundle data, and factory reports for errors- Pattern/spec/checking automation using AI-assisted review- Document and spreadsheet cleanup- AI agents/workflows using tools like ChatGPT, Claude, OpenClaw, cloud app builders, Python/JavaScript, APIs, and databases- Turning messy factory processes into simple internal apps employees can actually use.
:The ideal person: You do not need to be a senior engineer. We want someone curious, practical, and comfortable learning quickly with AI tools. Good fit if you:- Have some coding experience in Python, JavaScript, SQL, or similar- Know how to use AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, or other coding assistants to build and debug apps- Can break a messy business problem into steps- Are comfortable working with spreadsheets/CSV files, forms, dashboards, or simple databases- Want to learn how manufacturing, apparel, payroll, piece-rate work, and operations really function- Can communicate clearly with non-technical people- Are willing to come onsite in Morton Grove to observe processes and test tools with the team.
Bonus skills, not required- Experience with cloud app platforms, automation tools, APIs, Airtable, Retool, Supabase, Firebase, Vercel, GitHub, Zapier/Make, or similar- Computer vision, OCR, or document extraction- Apparel, pattern making, sewing, factory, industrial engineering, or operations experience- Data analysis, dashboards, or process improvement.
Example projects- Build a prototype app that imports factory production data and flags payroll/piece-rate exceptions before payroll is finalized.- Create an AI workflow that checks order/spec documents against production worksheets and flags mismatches.- Create a dashboard that shows production progress by style, operation, employee, or department.- Test whether AI/computer vision can assist with pattern/spec checking or QC documentation.
