Description

The Criminal Branch is responsible for filing and prosecuting misdemeanor criminal cases from court offices located throughout Los Angeles. The cases involve a wide variety of offenses including California Penal Code violations (such as theft, battery, domestic violence, child physical and sexual abuse, elder abuse, human trafficking offenses, and many others), Los Angeles Municipal Code violations (including both personal and property-related offenses), California Vehicle Code violations such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and other state code violations. The Office of the City Attorney works closely with local law enforcement agencies, including the Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles Sheriff's Department, California Highway Patrol and numerous city, county, state, and federal regulatory agencies to prosecute crimes occurring in the City of Los Angeles.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Legal Secretary will work closely with assigned attorneys and support staff to provide a full range of secretarial and administrative support services. The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Reviewing and processing incoming case referrals;

• Preparing criminal case filings, pre-trial and trial motions;

• Filing of criminal cases (including e-filing);

• Scheduling and tracking court appearances, hearings, and motions;

• Maintaining case files and daily court case calendars;

• Assisting with ordering and responding to discovery requests;

• Drafting correspondence, reports, and training materials;

• Utilizing computer systems to enter, retrieve and manipulate information including

the Office’s criminal case management system, Evidence.com, CLIPS - The CJIS Integrators, and Trial Court Information System (TCIS), Consolidated Criminal History Reporting System (CHRS) and Cal-Photo.

• Communicating with internal staff members, third parties, and the public regarding criminal matters;

• Redacting of criminal history reports;

• Ordering transcripts and working with interpreters/translators;

• Acting as a liaison with the public, and with federal, state, and local agencies;

• Communicating with and utilizing third-party vendors;

• Assisting with the organizing and ordering of office supplies;

• Working collaboratively with other support staff members; and

• Performing other secretarial duties for the Branch as assigned.
