Outreach and Education Intern
Job Summary:
The Outreach Intern is responsible for supporting community engagement, environmental education, and outreach efforts within the San Dieguito River Valley watershed. This role blends social media content creation and other digital outreach with hands-on experience at community events and programs. This individual photographs and records content at Conservancy events, staffs tables or booths at public-facing events, and assists with marketing and communications tasks as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Social Media Management (35%)
• Create engaging, mission-aligned content for the conservancy’s social media platforms that highlight wildlife, conservation efforts, and community programs;
• Draft captions, schedule posts, and edit photos or videos as needed; and
• Assist with maintaining a consistent brand voice and increasing audience engagement Photograph and document events for SDRVC digital platforms.
Event Support (35%)
• Support staff and volunteers at community events, fairs, and festivals by helping set up and break down outreach tables, distributing informational materials, and engaging with the public;
• Staff outreach tables and educational booths;
• Assist with educational programs, workshops, and guided activities by interacting with participants, answering basic questions, and helping ensure events run smoothly; and
• Represent the conservancy in a friendly, professional manner to foster positive community relationships.
Marketing Support (30%)
• Attend outreach events and activities to photograph, record, and document key moments;
• Organize and archive digital media for use on social media, the website, or other communication platforms; and
• Provide general support for marketing and communications efforts, such as drafting short blurbs, updating contact lists, organizing outreach materials, tracking event attendance, etc.
Qualifications/Requirements:
• High School Diploma or GED, required;
• Conservation related coursework or knowledge, preferred;
• Photography or content creation experience, preferred;
• Interest in environmental education, conservation, or community outreach;
• Comfortable interacting with the public;
• Has an energetic and professional demeanor;
• Ability to be flexible in balancing multiple priorities;
• Ability to work independently with little or no supervision;
• Must exhibit a high level of confidentiality;
• Excellent written and oral communication skills;
• Strong organizational, time-management, and problem-solving skills and ability to meet tight deadlines;
• Be a team player;
• Familiarity with social media platforms (ex. Instagram, Facebook, X, YouTube, TikTok, etc.);
• High proficiency in MS Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and SharePoint;
• Working knowledge of all standard office equipment;
• Ability to travel to various locations;
• Ability to work outdoors, sometimes in adverse weather conditions;
• May be exposed to inclement weather conditions including extreme temperatures;
• Ability to travel to locations within San Diego County, primarily the San Dieguito River Valley;
• Access to reliable transportation and willingness to travel as required;
• Ability to lead hikes through uneven terrain and elevation, and perform some off-trail trekking while carrying/using equipment;
• Ability to work during evenings, weekends, and irregular work schedules as needed;
• Ability to work remotely and in office as needed;
• Attending conferences or training sessions within San Diego County;
• Sitting at a desk for sometimes long and continuous periods of time;
• Answering or making calls on the telephone for sometimes long and continuous periods of time;
• Using a keyboard to perform research, and to communicate through written means for sometimes long and continuous periods of time;
• Looking at a computer monitor for sometimes long and continuous periods of time;
• Occasionally standing, walking, reaching, and stooping;
• Lifting up to 30 lbs.; and
• Exposure to low to moderate noise level.
