Job Title: Paid Medical Intern – General Surgery
Department: Clinical & Administrative Operations
Reports To: Practice Manager / Clinical Supervisor / Lead Provider
Employment Type: This is a FULL-TIME position with at least a one-year commitment.
Schedule: Monday–Friday, Full-Time (40 hours/week)
Compensation: Hourly, based on experience
Position Summary
The Paid Medical Intern position is a full-time developmental role designed for individuals pursuing a career in healthcare, medicine, nursing, physician assistant studies, or healthcare administration. This internship offers immersive, hands-on experience within a fast-paced general surgery practice, providing exposure to patient care, surgical workflows, clinical operations, and medical office administration.
The intern will work closely with surgeons, clinical staff, and administrative team members to support daily office operations while developing essential healthcare skills and professional experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Prepare and stock patient exam rooms and procedure rooms.
- Room patients and assist with patient intake, including obtaining vital signs and updating medical histories.
- Assist providers with in-office procedures and patient preparation.
- Scribe for providers.
- Perform comprehensive chart preparation and obtain outside records.
- Triage clinical calls.
Surgical Practice Exposure
- Gain exposure to surgical scheduling workflows, including procedure coordination and OR documentation.
- Learn CPT and ICD-10 coding basics related to general surgery procedures.
- Observe pre-operative and post-operative care coordination.
- Assist with surgical packet preparation and patient education materials.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Answer phones and assist with front desk workflow as needed.
- Schedule appointments, surgeries, and follow-up visits.
- Verify patient demographics and insurance information.
- Assist with medical records, scanning, and documentation in athenahealth or other EMR systems.
- Support referral processing and prior authorization workflows.
Professional Development
- Works in close proximity with the surgeons.
- Participate in staff meetings and ongoing training.
- Learn HIPAA standards, patient confidentiality, and healthcare compliance requirements.
- Receive mentorship and performance feedback throughout internship.
Qualifications
- High school diploma required; currently enrolled in or recently completed a program in pre-med, biology, nursing, public health, healthcare administration, or related field preferred.
- Strong interest in surgery or healthcare careers.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Professional demeanor and strong work ethic.
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced medical environment.
- Basic computer and EMR proficiency preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous healthcare, volunteer, or customer service experience preferred.
- CPR certification is preferred.
- Interest in medical school, PA school, nursing school, or healthcare administration strongly encouraged.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to perform repetitive clinical and office tasks.
