Underwriting Support Specialist/Sr. Underwriting Support Specialist

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as an integral member of Markel's AI underwriting team fulfilling basic underwriting responsibilities. This position will handle day-to- day client servicing including underwriting issues and managing workflow to ensure the client has a superior experience. This role allows production underwriters to focus on broker relationships and business development. Position is responsible for underwriting less complex renewal business and develops into handling less complex new business. Supports attainment of written premium goals, loss ratio, and growth opportunities of team by providing backup to underwriters and superior customer service.

 

Job Responsibilities

Manage renewal business under the supervision of an Underwriter and move to writing new business - prepare analysis of exposure and present to Underwriter for signoff.

Able to gather and review information on financial conditions, risk exposure, loss history, and economic trends that may impact the terms and conditions offered to the client.

Able to extract internal data and research external information to identify trends impacting product line.

Able to provide basic forms/coverage interpretations and advise on additional coverage needs, understand and evaluate exposures, and underwrite policy change requests.

Accountable for accurate underwriting documentation/information in account management system and adherence to documentation standards.

Ensure accuracy of information inputted into all appropriate systems and verify that all necessary documentation is in the file.

Establish, support, and maintain effective relationships and/or regular contact with clients and build strong relationships with employees across the organization.

 

Education

High school diploma required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.

 

Work Experience/Skill Sets

Excellent oral and written communication and organizational skills.

1-2 years of relevant experience in underwriting support preferred.

Ability to multi-task in fast-paced environment.

Ability to work independently and within a team.

Ability to follow process and attention to details.

Willingness to work toward insurance designation. (AINS)

Intermediate level of proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft Word and Excel.
