Urban Planning Intern
Do you get excited about city data, local businesses, and celebrating and building upon the history of public spaces? The Lakeview Roscoe Village Chamber of Commerce, sole service provider for Special Service Area 27 (SSA 27), seeks a part-time urban planning intern who is interested in urban planning, community development, or public administration. The intern will gain hands-on experience collecting and utilizing data for planning purposes,with the goal of improving the Lakeview and Roscoe Village neighborhoods. This internship offers an estimated stipend of $750 /month (~$1500 total) and we will work with students on class credit. Applications are open until Friday, June 14, but the goal is expedite the process for the internship to begin as close to Monday, June 1 as possible.
Qualifications and Time Commitment
Strong attention to detail, interest in urban planning, local history, and/or public administration (or a related field) and experience with Excel or other spreadsheet software is required. Intern must commit to 20 hours per week between March through the end of May, with the opportunity to further extend the internship. This is a hybrid remote/in-office internship, and we offer flexibility toward which days of the week the intern would spend in our office at 1409 W. Addison St., Chicago, IL. Must be willing to conduct some outdoor field observation.
Responsibilities
Lakeview Historical Kiosk Research
- Assist in research and curation of historical information and photos that reflect the rich history of Chicago's West Lakeview community.
- Co-write (without the assistance of generative AI tools) simple 1-2 paragraph briefs accessibly breaking down notable historical topics. These briefs will be featured on Historical Kiosks in Lakeview for years to come.
Streetscape Assessment
- Update database of street furniture inventory with current street furniture conditions and other updates, through field observation.
- Assist with the permitting process for streetscape elements.
Economic & Community Development
- Shadow and contribute to programs and projects aimed at local business and community support.
- Evaluate local programs and business offerings.
Placemaking
- Shadow and assist with planning processes for placemaking projects to create a sense of place and community in public spaces.
Public Administration
- Support meeting preparation for Special Service Area Commission and related committees and city reporting requirements
Other tasks as assigned, with an opportunity to develop additional projects based on the intern’s interests and learning goals.

The Lakeview Roscoe Village Chamber serves the area bounded by the Chicago River on the west and Racine Ave. on the east. West of Ravenswood Ave., our service area extends from Diversey Pkwy. on the south to Addison St. on the north. East of Ravenswood Ave., our service area extends from Diversey Pkwy. on the south to Irving Park Rd. on the north.
