Field Technician (2) at the Mianus River Gorge
Program Description: Mianus River Gorge, a conservation organization and 975-acre nature preserve in southeastern New York, is offering two field technician positions for the summer to complete work on a state-funded grant project.
Typically, our employees major in biology, ecology, or environmental sciences, etc., but this position is open to anyone interested in conservation, natural resource management, ecological research, and field biology. The main qualities we are looking for are a passion for the natural world plus a strong work ethic.
- Position will last for a period of 11 weeks. Positions typically run from early June to early August, but some flexibility is available on start or end dates.
- Each tech will work under a field crew leader, supervised by the Director of Conservation and Stewardship.
- Compensation: $6400 for the summer (approximately $20/hr x 30hrs/week)
Projects for 2026 include:
-- Vegetation surveying to monitor and document rare and invasive species in the MRG preserve
-- Invasive species control, habitat restoration, and other land management work.
-- Assistance with other land management and research projects as needed, which could include black bear camera trapping, salamander monitoring, invasive species burning, etc.
Applicant Eligibility
-- All undergraduate or recently graduated students are eligible to apply. We do not require applicants to major in a particular discipline; however, exposure to or interest in the fields of ecology, environmental science, or land management is encouraged.
-- Technician must be self-motivated and work well in group settings.
-- Applicants should be prepared for strenuous work outdoors in the summer (e.g., field research and land management projects) as well as perform indoor work when necessary (e.g., data entry and GIS projects).
– Skills in identifying native woody and invasive plants found in southern NY are a plus.
The position will run from June 1 to Aug 14 -- applicants should be available during this period.
Applicants should be able to commute daily to Bedford, NY, as summer housing is not available.
