OUR BUREAU OF FOOD SAFETY & COMMUNITY SANITATION IS HIRING!
MISSION & OBJECTIVES
The Bureau of Food Safety and Community Sanitation (BFSCS) protects the public, including New York’s most vulnerable citizens, from a broad range of hazards that may pose a threat to health or safety. This includes hazards related to: food safety wherever meals are served to the public, including food service establishments like restaurants, school cafeterias, mobile food vending carts, senior centers, soup kitchens, temporary food service establishments and places that prepare and supply foods to food service establishments, such as commissaries and shared kitchens; second-hand smoke in workplaces, including bars, restaurants, and most other enclosed public areas.
Responsibilities
- Performing regular inspections at food establishments including, but not limited to, restaurants, school cafeterias, senior centers, and mobile food vending carts and trucks, to ensure they are permitted and operating safely and according to regulations
- Responding to complaints from the public regarding food establishments, tobacco use and other environmental health issues
- Performing enforcement activities when violations are observed as the result of a routine inspection or in response to a complaint
- Promoting food safety through education and outreach
- Providing food safety training and certification to New York City food workers through our Health Academy
