The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) is the primary public health governmental agency of the state of New Mexico. The Department of Health is composed of various organizational units with different functions and activities. The NMDOH Office of General Counsel is the office of in-house attorneys who represent the agency and advise agency staff in their work. While the main Office of General Counsel is located in Santa Fe, NM there is opportunity to work out of the NMDOH offices in Albuquerque, NM.
Why does the job exist?
This position serves in the NMDOH Office of General Counsel as a legal intern to one of several attorneys. The student will gain hands-on experience in legal research, regulatory analysis, data organization, and professional report writing while learning how agency policies align with state and federal laws. The organization will receive a concise, well-documented research report that identified key regulatory trends and supports informed decision-making compliance efforts.
How does it get done?
* Assists with writing documents, analyzing results, and creating formal reports.
* Performs routine research and investigations.
* Assists in conducting legal research.
* Assists with analyzing trends and developing data reports.
* Assists with devising methods and procedures for obtaining data needed.
* Performs standardized work procedures focusing on agency policies and procedures, state and federal laws, rules and regulations, and administrative techniques.
* Assists team members/customers to produce results within the organization.
* Performs at a limited level of complexity, problem solving, and/or accountability.
* Provides administrative office support to the Chief Records Custodian for records maintenance and IPRA requests if time allows.
The student will create a comparative legal research report analyzing recent state and federal regulatory changes affecting the agency, summarizing key finding and compliance implications. Compile the research with basic trend analysis and recommendations for internal use.

This legal intern assists the attorneys and Office of General Counsel staff who represent various divisions and bureaus within the Department of Health.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate has a degree or is seeking a degree in one of the following areas:
1. Political Science
2. Pre-Law/Legal Studies
3. Criminal Justice
4. Public Administration
5. Public Policy
6. Government
7. Economics
8. Business Administration
9. Data Analytics
Additionally, they will be organized, detail oriented, and have an interest in either public health or public service.
Minimum Qualification
Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university OR completion of at least four (4) semesters (or equivalent) at an accredited college or university within the last two (2) years.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer usage.
