Staff Development Specialist – JOB DESCRIPTION

 

RESPONSIBLE TO: Director, Learning & Development

 

FUNCTION:

Develop and present training materials to employees that comply with regulations, agency mission and meet the needs of the departments to build a competent workforce. 

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to develop curriculum and teach a variety of adult learners in a classroom setting.  Knowledge of or ability to learn agency programs, regulations governing agency programs and service provision to individuals with disabilities.  Good computer skills, including the ability to produce training materials by using programs such as Power Point, Word processing and other related software programs.  Reliability, flexibility and the ability and willingness to work non-traditional hours as needed or assigned to provide staff training.  Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with others in a cross-functional team environment.  Physical condition or reasonable accommodation(s) commensurate with the demands of the job.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in human service, education or related field and two (2) years professional experience.  Experience working in a program serving individuals with disabilities or in a staff training and development or supervisory capacity strongly preferred; OR Associates Degree in human service, education or related field and four (4) years professional experience.  Experience working in a program serving individuals with disabilities or in a staff training and development or supervisory capacity strongly preferred; OR a minimum of five (5) years proven experience as a staff trainer with supervisory experience.   Valid driver’s license, use of personal vehicle and ability to travel for work or equivalent accommodations required.

OTHER DUTIES

 

TECHNICAL:

  1. Present and provide high quality staff training for agency personnel that is consistent with the agency mission, adheres to regulatory issues, and promotes the department’s goals and objectives.
  2. Provide consultation, coaching assistance to program service areas in order to identify and meet needs for staff training and development, to deliver such trainings while mentoring staff to increase skill level in meeting the needs of the people served.
  3. Designs or assists in the design of training curricula with a special focus on training topics mandated by regulatory bodies as well as specialized training required by specific departments.
  4. Assists program service areas in developing and/or obtaining training resources (people, training packages, equipment) necessary for implementing training programs and instructing departmental employees, where necessary, in the delivery of high-quality training.
  5. Coordinates staff training in subjects/topics that are mandated in more than one program area to maximize efficient use of training resources.
  6. Utilizes technology including but not limited to: PowerPoint, word processing, audio and visual materials and other pertinent technology for the improvement of training sessions for employees inclusive of facilitation of remote learning via Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and other remote platforms.
  7. Ensures that agency training needs are met by providing essential trainings at non-scheduled times and upon request
  8. Utilizes and is proficient in the use of the Training Management System.
  9. Develops own skills through attendance as conferences, webinars, reading materials and online courses to further enhance training offerings to employees.
  10. Utilizes principles of adult teaching in course development and presentation.
  11. Assists the team in planning, organizing, and implementing all pertinent agency and departmental outcomes that impact the development of the workforce.
  12. Participates on a wide variety of internal and external consortiums and committees that enhance the training for agency personnel.
  13. Maintain certifications in pertinent specialization areas including but not limited to:  Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Strategies for Crisis Intervention Prevention-Revised, NADSP Certifications, and pertinent trainings that require such specializations.
