Young People’s Alliance — Summer Advocacy Associate
The Young People’s Alliance is a youth-led, bipartisan organization helping young people reclaim the American Dream and representing 3,000 students across 75 campuses nationally. We develop innovative policy solutions that actually work for our generation and achieve real policy change for our generation nation-wide across our policy priorities in affordability, economic opportunity, and community sectors.
Our team has testified before Congress, defeated federal AI moratorium initiatives, and led a national coalition on human-like AI that shaped legislation recently signed into law in Washington state (WA2225).
We are seeking a passionate and driven individual to advance meaningful policy solutions as a summer advocacy associate.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until April 22nd.
Legislative Work
- Draft and refine bill text, amendments, and legislative language
- Prepare one-pagers, talking points, and policy briefs for lawmakers
- Cultivate and sustain relationships with policymakers through outreach, including emails and phone calls
- Research policy precedents and analyze legislative feasibility
Coalition Building & Advocacy
- Write coalition letters and coordinate with partner organizations to share the youth perspective
- Coalitions cover our policies in housing, economic opportunity, and community spaces. Examples of topics that coalitions work on include AI companions, AI mass automation, and algorithmic pricing-fixing and collusion in housing
- Build relationships with stakeholders across government, industry, and civil society
- Support lobbying efforts and committee strategy
Communications & Research
- Draft memos, explanations, and research documents
- Respond to rapid-turnaround requests (op-eds, press materials, crisis response)
- Conduct policy research and analysis
Other
- Regularly communicate with our student chapter members to provide mentorship and legislative involvement opportunities
- Stay up to date with the news, synthesize information from high-level sources, and tactfully share updates with reporters, partners, and staff
What We're Looking For
- You proactively identify ways to help and solve problems without being asked
- You can quickly switch between different projects and policy domains
- Scrappy and persistent, always finding a way to overcome obstacles and uncertainty
- You can draft clear, detail-oriented, and persuasive policy documents under pressure
- Comfortable with a fast-paced, demanding environment (40+ hours/week is standard)
- Able to handle emergency requests and weekend work when needed
- Interest in policy, especially tech policy, workforce development, housing, or education preferred. Lived experience with related issues is a plus
- Excited to work across party lines with a variety of actors who have different ideologies
- Thrives on direct, frequent feedback and open communication
- Non-stop drive to improve the lives of young people
Location: Washington, D.C.
Start Date: Flexible, start date running from May – June, depending on when an applicant’s semester ends
Salary range: $800/week with a $1,000 relocation stipend
