EEC Undergraduate Intern

Outdoor Recreation, Operations & Program Development

About the Role

The Environmental Education Center (EEC) is seeking motivated NMU students for a hands-on internship experience in outdoor leadership, recreation management, and community programming.

This role goes beyond traditional outdoor recreation—interns can also explore interests in marketing, logistics, operations, and program development, helping shape and grow EEC offerings.

What You’ll Do

  • Co-lead and support outdoor programs (hiking, paddling, biking, snowshoeing, camping)
  • Assist with program planning, facilitation, and participant experience
  • Support horticulture, sustainability, and community education programs
  • Provide customer service and assist with gear rentals and trip prep
  • Maintain equipment, safety standards, and program spaces

Operations & Logistics

  • Help organize trips, gear systems, and scheduling
  • Assist with creating program guides and internal workflows
  • Improve systems that make programs run smoothly

Marketing & Communications

  • Capture photos/videos and create social media content
  • Assist with outreach, storytelling, and promotions
  • Contribute ideas to grow EEC visibility and engagement

Program Development

  • Help design new programs, events, or workshops
  • Gather feedback and suggest improvements
  • Support community-focused initiatives

Who Should Apply

  • Current NMU students (all majors welcome)
  • Interested in outdoor recreation, community engagement, or sustainability
  • Organized, self-motivated, and willing to learn
  • Comfortable working outdoors in variable conditions
  • First Aid/CPR certified (or willing to obtain)
  • Reliable transportation preferred for some roles

Details

  • Up to 20 hours/week
  • Up to $20/hour (based on funding & role)
  • Can be completed for academic credit and/or paid experience
  • Scheduled in coordination with NMU and EEC staff
