The Learning Facilitator is a core member of the Flint Freedom Schools Collaborative (FFSC) team, responsible for delivering a high-quality, culturally grounded, and engaging learning experience for scholars. This role brings the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom Schools model to life through instruction, relationship-building, and daily program execution.

Learning Facilitators play a critical role in shaping scholar identity, strengthening literacy, and cultivating a joyful, affirming classroom environment.

 

Key Responsibilities

1. Academic Enrichment & Instruction (40%)

  • Facilitate the CDF Integrated Reading Curriculum (IRC) with fidelity and enthusiasm
  • Develop and submit weekly lesson plans aligned with program goals
  • Support literacy development through engaging, culturally relevant instruction
  • Lead and support Harambee and structured learning activities

2. Scholar Relationships & Culture Building (40%)

  • Build strong, affirming relationships with scholars and families
  • Foster a positive, safe, and inclusive classroom culture
  • Implement effective classroom management strategies rooted in respect and engagement
  • Model positive behavior and leadership for scholars

3. Program Implementation & Collaboration (20%)

  • Set up and maintain classroom spaces aligned with FFSC and CDF standards
  • Collaborate with Site Coordinators and team members to ensure program success
  • Participate in daily debriefs and team reflections
  • Support afternoon enrichment and special program activities

 

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to engage and manage groups of youth effectively
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines (lesson plans, reports, etc.)
  • Adaptability and solution-oriented mindset in fast-paced environments
  • Ability to create inclusive, culturally responsive learning spaces
  • Positive, proactive, and professional demeanor

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least one (1) year removed from high school
  • At least one (1) year of college preferred 
  • Demonstrated passion for working with youth
  • Ability to commit to the full duration of the program

Program Commitment & Key Dates

Learning Facilitators must be available for all required training and program dates:

  • National Training (Knoxville, TN): June 2–7, 2026
  • Local Training: May 30 & June 13, 2026
  • Site Setup: June 15–18, 2026
  • Program Dates: June 22 – July 31, 2026
  • Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM
  • Breakdown: August 3–4, 2026
