Data Analysis Intern
The New Mexico Municipal League and New Mexico Self-Insurers’ Fund are looking for a summer intern to focus on data analysis efforts related to insurance claims and risk management. This role involves collecting, organizing, and analyzing datasets; identifying trends and risk factors; and assisting in the development of data-driven insights to support and inform executive leadership. The position also includes exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and other technical tools to improve data analysis and workflow efficiency. This position is designed to provide hands-on experience applying analytical and technical skills.
The Municipal League is a nonprofit, nonpartisan association representing and serving New Mexico’s cities, towns, and villages. In addition to serving 106 municipalities, the Municipal League also supports 12 professional “subsection” groups comprised of elected officials and municipal employees. The Municipal League also organizes and administers the New Mexico Self-Insurers’ Fund, which offers workers’ compensation, liability, and property insurance coverage to its members. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Collect, clean, and organize datasets. Datasets may be related to insurance claims, risk management, municipal policies, or legislative activity.
- Conduct statistical analysis to identify trends and patterns in insurance claims, risk management, and related data.
- Support development of reports, summaries, and data visualizations to communicate findings.
- Assist in building and testing analytical or predictive models related to insurance claims, risk management, legal outcomes, or policy impacts.
- Utilize AI tools and emerging technologies to support data processing, research, and analysis workflows.
- Document methodologies, assumptions, and findings in a clear and organized manner.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE
- Analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong written communication skills and ability to clearly summarize findings.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a team environment.
- Experience with, or exposure to, tools such as R, Python, or similar (classroom experience acceptable).
- Familiarity with, or interest in, AI tools or data analysis technologies (preferred but not required).
- Understanding of municipal government operations, insurance programs, or legislative processes a plus.
EDUCATION
- Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program in data science, statistics, economics, computer science, public policy, political science, or a related field.
- Coursework or demonstrated interest in data analysis, statistics, econometrics, or quantitative research methods.
COMPENSATION
This is a temporary summer internship position. Compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
OTHER INFORMATION
Work location is the Municipal League’s Santa Fe office. This is a full-time summer internship (approximately May–August, flexible start and end dates). This position reports to the Senior Policy Analyst.
