Our Internship Program
TCOLE's comprehensive internship program provides college students with valuable firsthand experience in law enforcement standards, training, and administration. Through an 10-week structured experience in our Legal Division, this intern will develop practical skills while contributing to meaningful projectsthat support the agency's regulatory mission. Our program features a unique leadership development module that enhances professional growth while building connections with experienced professionals across the legal and law enforcement communities.
Who We're LookingFor
The Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) is seeking a motivated college student for our Summer 2026 internship program located at 6330 E HWY 290, Suite 200, Austin, TX.
The Legal Division College Intern performs professional-level work assisting the legal team within TCOLE. Work involves researching, analyzing, investigating, and drafting legal documents, and assisting attorneys with case management.
Works under moderatesupervision with limitedlatitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Compensation is $3,520monthly for the duration of the 10-weekprogram.
Examples of Work Performed
Drafts and prepares pleadings, motions, briefs, abstracts, petitions, summary judgments, legal correspondence, and other legal documents.
Researches and analyzes sources such as statutes, case law, administrative records, opinions, articles, treaties, property titles, and rules and regulations.
Organizes service of subpoenas, service of notices of deposition, and preparation of other legal documents.
Reviews and organizes discovery requests.
Checks citations, quotations, footnotes, and references for accuracy.
Summarizes laws, rules, and regulations.
Files pleadings with courts.
Schedules, attends, and prepares attorneys for hearings, trials, meetings, interviews, appellate arguments, depositions, and docket calls.
Reviews and performs redacting of confidential documents for filing with various courts.
Participates in leadership development and law enforcement administrative and regulatory training.
Participates in staffmeetings, professional development, and agency events.
Completes an agency project addressing current agency needs.
Collaborates with division mentors throughout the program.
Performs related work as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Educationand Experience:
Currently enrolled in an accredited college/university or a recent graduate (within the past 12 months) entering law school. Pursuing or completed a degree in Law, Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Political Science, Education, or related field.
Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
Ability to maintainthe security and integrity of confidential law enforcement information.
Strong interest in the legal field, law enforcement, or public service.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency with MicrosoftOffice applications (Word,Excel, Outlook).
Critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities.
Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Strong organizational skillsand attention to detail.
Ability to participate in division rotations and leadership development activities.
Preferred Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
Knowledge of Texas criminal justice system structure and operations.
Previous volunteer or work experience in law, law enforcement or public service.
Experience with data analysis and report preparation.
Understanding of regulatory compliance and administrative procedures.
Program Structure
This comprehensive 10-weekinternship follows a structured format:
Progressive project work addressing currentagency needs.
Weekly leadership development training.
Mentorship from divisionsupervisors throughout program.
Final project presentation to agency leadership.
Internship Duration
10 weeks: June 8, 2026 ending August 14, 2026.
Full-time (40 hours/week)
