DATCP currently has an opening for a Field Vet Supervisor (Veterinary Supervisor) position within the Division of Animal Health. 

This is a field-based position and routine statewide travel is required. The selected applicants can select a headquarters in one of the following counties:

  • Adams, Barron, Calumet, Chippewa, Clark, Dunn, Eau Claire, Jackson, Juneau, La Crosse, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marquette, Monroe, Portage, Price, Rusk, Sawyer, Shawano, Washburn, Waushara, Winnebago, Wood

 

Qualifying candidates are not required to live in a county headquarter location. However, reimbursement for commuting to or from the employee’s assigned headquarters is not provided (e.g., mileage, meals, parking, lodging, etc.). Routine travel within an assigned territory and throughout the state for assigned work and emergency response is required.

POSITION SUMMARY

This is a professional supervisory position acting as a specialist in animal health disease control and eradication programs. The incumbent is responsible for investigating disease outbreaks; completing epidemiologic testing and investigation on exposed or infected herds, flocks and farms; developing and implementing herd, flock and farm clean-up plans in conjunction with the epidemiologist, state veterinarian and APHIS Area Veterinarian in Charge (AVIC); investigating and reporting potential exotic diseases; providing assistance to law enforcement in the investigation of alleged humane or animal neglect cases; and participating in special projects. 

The position is also responsible for enforcing animal health rules including quarantines, branding and animal depopulation as directed; providing information to the public, animal industry and veterinarians on disease control programs and other issues; serving as lead worker directing animal health inspectors and veterinarians during area tests as assigned; providing back-up support to staff veterinarians during position vacancies in the Central Office. 

The primary disease control programs include but are not limited to: brucellosis, equine infectious anemia, fish health, Johne’s disease, CWD, pseudorabies, tuberculosis, BSE, scrapie, rabies, foreign animal disease recognition, testing, surveillance, and diseases of captive wildlife and wildlife as it interfaces with domestic animals and other farm raised animals.  This position works under the supervision of the Director, Bureau of Field Services. 

This position directly supervises the Division of Animal Health (DAH) field veterinarians.  In this capacity the position assigns and monitors staff caseloads; ensures animal health rules are being enforced; and provides technical support and expertise for the staff.  This is a working supervisor position that will maintain its own caseload related to animal disease activities and assignments.

SALARY INFORMATION

The classification of this position is Veterinarian Supervisor, which is in schedule-range 81-03 with a starting annual salary between $110,240 and $116,480 based on qualifications.

This position is not represented by a collective bargaining unit. A 12-month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan at the time of hire.

These OJT opportunities include direct experience and practice through collaboration with co-workers/supervisor, peer mentoring, and job-specific training modules.

DATCP does not sponsor work visas. Any appointment made will be contingent on the selected applicant being able to provide documentation of eligibility to work in the United States.

Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to provide one’s own transportation for work purposes, is required.

 

Possession of, or eligibility to obtain, credentials to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Wisconsin.


Travel is required for approximately 75% of this position’s duties, some overnight travel—within the state of Wisconsin and occasional interstate or international travel may be required.

Ability to work outside of normal business hours for animal disease response.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Minimally qualified candidates will have each of the following:

  • A license to practice veterinary medicine in Wisconsin, or the capability to acquire a WI license to practice veterinary medicine.
  • A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an AVMA accredited college
  • Accredited by the federal bureau under 9 CFR parts 160 to 162, or ability to become accredited under  9 CFR parts 160 to 162
  • Experience in the practice of veterinary medicine. 
  • Experience leading people, such as assigning work, managing a project, allocating resources, etc.

In addition to the minimum qualifications above, highly qualified candidates will have one or more of the following:

  • Experience dealing with animal health related regulations (ex. Movement requirements, testing for regulatory diseases, etc.)
  • Experience leading/supervising geographically dispersed or remote teams.
  • Experience in the practice of veterinary medicine with food animals.
