Calibration and Metrology Lab Technician

Position Summary & Responsibilities:

This position will remain posted until filled.                Location: KDA Laboratory - Manhattan, KS

The Kansas Metrology Laboratory (KML) provides calibration services to ensure mass and volume items are accurate and reliable using procedures set forth by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Mass items calibrated at the KML include individual weights and weight kits ranging from 1 mg to 3,000 pounds, as well as weight carts weighing up to 8,000 pounds. Volume items calibrated at the KML include containers with known volumes (provers) ranging from 5 to 1,500 gallons. These measurement items are used to verify the accuracy of equipment such as scales, liquid measuring devices and other instruments used in commercial sales, laboratories and manufacturing. The KML serves licensed service companies, other laboratories, government agencies, and a variety of industries that depend on precise measurements for their work. 

This Calibration and Metrology Laboratory Technician position will cover a variety of responsibilities to support the daily laboratory operations. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Safely move and handle heavy or oversized items using forklifts, crane systems and other lifting equipment. No prior certification is required to apply for this position. 
  • Unload, load and move customer measurement items.
  • Maintain inventory of testing supplies including lead seals, nitrile gloves, and cleaning supplies.
  • Perform laboratory calibrations of mass and volume items such as weights ranging from 25 pounds to 1,000 pounds and 5-gallon volumetric provers. 
  • Assist with maintaining laboratory cleanliness by sweeping, mopping and dusting testing areas.
  • All work is performed in a controlled laboratory setting, with training provided.
  • This position provides opportunities for advancement through the completion of various NIST courses. Participation in these courses requires minimum travel (1week/course).

Qualifications:

  • Professionally minded individuals with at least one year of direct experience with physical sciences or a laboratory setting. Candidates may also qualify through a combination of relevant education, work experience, training or certification.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
  • Physical ability to stand for long periods of time and crouch occasionally.
  • Ability to complete provided certification training for the use of lifting equipment and safely operate lifting equipment when moving heavy items within the laboratory. 
  • Employee must have a valid Class C (or higher) Kansas driver’s license or equivalent license from another state. Employee is responsible to maintain an acceptable driving record to safely drive state vehicles and be willing and able to fulfill all job-related travel normally associated with this position.   

Preferred Qualifications (Not required):

  • Previous certification for forklift and crane operation, and experience with safe rigging and lifting techniques.
