Research Intelligence & Scientific Database Intern

The Focused Ultrasound Foundation (FUSF) is a unique, medical research, education, and advocacy organization created as the catalyst to accelerate the development and adoption of focused ultrasound. JOB SUMMARY

The Focused Ultrasound Foundation is seeking a summer intern to work with our team on several projects related to partnerships and research support. This is an exciting opportunity to gain broad exposure to the world of focused ultrasound through the lens of scientific landscape analysis, research funding intelligence, and strategic partnership identification.

The intern will support the maintenance and enhancement of scientific and stakeholder databases, ensuring accurate and up-to-date individual and institutional records. They will also conduct structured searches of grant funding databases to identify follow-on funding opportunities, emerging investigators, and potential strategic partners. This role offers exposure to research funding ecosystems, data management best practices, and strategic relationship development within the scientific community.

This summer internship requires full-time work in our Charlottesville-based office for a minimum commitment of eight weeks; the start and end dates are semi-flexible and will be discussed during the interview stage. Hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain and update internal scientific and stakeholder databases, ensuring investigator, institutional, and partner records are accurate and complete
  • Conduct structured searches of public and private grant funding databases to identify newly awarded grants and follow-on funding
  • Identify emerging investigators, research groups, and potential collaborators aligned with organizational priorities
  • Track and compile funding data related to focused ultrasound and relevant research areas
  • Assist in identifying potential strategic partners, collaborators, and stakeholders within the scientific ecosystem
  • Support data quality initiatives, including record verification, standardization, and database improvements
  • Prepare summaries, reports, and datasets to support programmatic and leadership decision-making

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in life sciences, biomedical engineering, public health, data science, information science, or a related discipline.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills, particularly when working with data
  • Interest in biomedical research, scientific collaboration, and research funding landscapes
  • Ability to conduct online research and synthesize information from multiple sources
  • Comfort working with databases, spreadsheets, or structured datasets (Excel or similar tools)
  • Strong written communication skills for summarizing and presenting findings
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team
  • An interest in focused ultrasound.

 

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

  • A final presentation to the FUSF staff at the conclusion of the internship
