AI Research Summer Intern – Grant Evaluation Intern
The Focused Ultrasound Foundation (FUSF) is a unique, medical research, education, and advocacy organization created as the catalyst to accelerate the development and adoption of focused ultrasound. Based in Charlottesville, but with a global reach, the Foundation is a nonprofit, high-performance, entrepreneurial, service organization that is market-driven and results-oriented.
JOB SUMMARY
One of the Foundation’s primary activities is awarding research grants that drive scientific discovery and clinical translation in the field of focused ultrasound. Additionally, we are interested in exploring the role of gamification within focused ultrasound. We are seeking a strategic, analytically minded intern to support an exploratory initiative evaluating the performance of advanced AI language models against historically funded Letters of Intent (LOIs). This role will involve structured comparison, qualitative and quantitative assessment, and synthesis of model outputs relative to prior funding decisions to identify alignment patterns, gaps, and optimization opportunities. The intern will collaborate cross-functionally to develop evaluation frameworks, generate insights on model strengths and limitations, and contribute to recommendations regarding responsible AI integration into research review workflows.
This summer internship requires full-time work in our Charlottesville-based office for a minimum commitment of eight weeks; the start and end dates are semi-flexible and will be discussed during the interview stage. Hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Within the context of the Focused Ultrasound Foundation, this initiative will center on AI-assisted analysis of translational and clinical research proposals spanning oncology, neurology, and other therapeutic applications of focused ultrasound. The intern will engage with de-identified LOIs, assess how effectively AI-generated evaluations reflect the Foundation’s strategic priorities and funding criteria, and help refine benchmarking metrics tailored to our scientific portfolio. This project is intended to enhance the efficiency of the grantmaking process by accelerating the receipt-to-decision timeframe while preserving rigor and strategic alignment, ultimately strengthening the Foundation’s ability to advance the field globally.
