The State of New Hampshire, Department of Agriculture, Markets, and Food, Plant Industry Division has a full-time vacancy for 19-1020 Biological Scientists-2.
Summary:
To inspect nurseries, wood products industries, wood lots, forested areas, neighborhoods, etc for detection of plant pests and plant diseases of concern. To identify, inspect, and perform systems audits at facilities that are a potential pathway for the spread of plant pests to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations regarding the movement of plant pests and diseases. To assist regulated industries with compliance to state and federal regulations regarding movement of plant pests and diseases.
YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS: Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree OR equivalent combination of 4 years of education and experience after completion of high school. Education and experience must be in entomology, invertebrate zoology, or plant pathology.
License/Certification: Valid driver’s license

Trainee Option: Candidates with an equivalent combination of 3+ years of relevant education and experience after completion of high school may be considered and hired in ‘trainee status’ for this position.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: One year of experience with insect and plant disease programs.

The work of an employee in trainee status in this position shall be overseen by a fully qualified individual. An employee in trainee status shall meet the minimum qualifications within the period of time specified on the SJD, not to exceed one year of being hired into this position.
Responsibilities:
Surveys damage caused by insects in forests, greenhouses, and agriculture of the state to assess any potential environmental and/or economic impacts.
Surveys for and collects insects and other arthropods during regular inspections to add to the Division’s database.
Conducts surveys for specific pests of economic importance or quarantine significance that could threaten the agriculture and economy of the state.
Responsible for conducting inspections of nurseries, firewood kilns, lumber kilns, mills, chippers, mulch processors, loggers, arborists, landscapers etc, upon request to ensure that they are in compliance with state and federal regulations to legally transport regulated articles from regulated areas as part of a program to reduce the spread of pests of economic importance or quarantine significance.
Issues compliance agreements to those facilities that meet state requirements for movement of regulated articles.
Conducts periodic systems audits of compliance agreement holders to ensure continued compliance with state and federal quarantines and regulations.
Develops and provides outreach materials and presentations to regulated industries, landowners, and the general public about invasive plant pests of concerns and potential regulatory activities.
Assists with entering information into the various databases the Division maintains.
Inspects nursery stock to make certain insects and/or plant diseases are not present, or to ensure that the plant stock meets all entry requirements of other states/countries.
Certifies shipments of nursery stock for movement to foreign countries, once qualified as a USDA APHIS cooperator.
Assists with identifying/classifying insects and other arthropods either sent or brought to the Department of Agriculture, Markets & Food, Division of Plant Industry
