Technical Designer

Berne Apparel creates dependable workwear and outdoor apparel designed for comfort, durability, and performance. Our product assortment includes insulated outerwear, bib overalls, coveralls, work jeans, shirts, sweatshirts, and accessories for men, women, and youth.

Job Description:

The Technical Designer is responsible for managing the technical development of Berne’s product lines, ensuring consistent fit, quality, and construction standards. This role works closely with design, product development, sourcing, and manufacturing partners to support the development process from design concept through pre-production approval.

The Technical Designer plays a key role in maintaining fit integrity, creating accurate technical documentation, and coordinating with vendors to ensure product specifications are executed correctly.

Primary Responsibilities

Technical Development & Product Execution

  • Manage the technical design process to ensure accurate integration of fit, materials, specifications, and construction details across product categories.
  • Create and maintain detailed technical documentation including product specifications, technical sketches, construction details, measurement charts, and grading information.
  • Monitor and help maintain brand standards for garment construction, fit, and durability across product lines.

Fit & Product Quality

  • Conduct and support fit sessions, documenting feedback and communicating adjustments to vendors to maintain consistent fit and functional performance.
  • Identify opportunities to improve existing styles by refining fit, construction methods, and materials to enhance performance and reduce production risks.
  • Assist in troubleshooting fit, quality, or construction issues during development and production.

Vendor & Production Collaboration

  • Collaborate with overseas vendors to manage garment sampling, including reviewing measurements, construction, patterns, grading, and sample quality.
  • Partner with product development and sourcing teams to support production feasibility and development timelines across multiple global vendors.

Development Tracking & Product Feedback

  • Track development progress and approvals using PLM systems while maintaining accurate product records.
  • Utilize customer feedback, wear testing results, and product reviews to support ongoing improvements to fit, quality, and performance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Technical Design, Apparel Development, Production, or a related field.
  • 3–6 years of experience in Technical Design or Product Development, preferably within workwear, outerwear, or performance apparel.
  • Strong understanding of garment construction, fit development, and fabric behavior.
  • Experience with patternmaking and grading across men’s, women’s, and/or youth apparel.
  • Experience working with PLM systems and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Familiarity with digital product development tools such as Browzwear, Optitex, or similar 2D/3D platforms.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple styles and development timelines simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills when collaborating with internal teams and overseas vendors.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong focus on product accuracy and quality.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
