The Emergency Veterinary Clinic of Tualatin (EVCOT) is seeking a veterinarian for a 3-year Emergency Medicine Mentorship Program designed for newly graduated doctors who want intensive emergency training while working in a busy referral emergency hospital.

This role is especially well suited to new graduates who are eager to build confidence in emergency medicine, develop strong clinical judgment, and gain meaningful hands-on experience in a highly collaborative environment.

Candidates selected for this position are expected to commit to and complete the full 3-year program.

For more than 30 years, EVCOT has been highly respected in the veterinary community, serving patients from the Portland metro area to the Oregon Coast. Founded by veterinarians, EVCOT remains owned by a currently practicing emergency veterinarian.

We are proud to be one of the most affordable emergency veterinary hospitals in the area while maintaining a high standard of care. Our practice is known for stable ownership and leadership, low staff turnover, and exceptional staff loyalty. This program reflects EVCOT’s long-term commitment to mentorship, clinical excellence, and developing the next generation of emergency veterinarians.

Why Join EVCOT’s Emergency Medicine Mentorship Program?

This 3-year program combines real clinical responsibility with structured mentorship so that participants can develop into confident emergency veterinarians with a strong clinical foundation and meaningful hands-on experience.

Highlights of the program include:

  • intensive emergency medicine training in a busy referral ER
  • direct mentorship from experienced emergency clinicians
  • progressive autonomy with strong clinical support
  • meaningful overnight emergency experience
  • exposure to ICU and critical care case management
  • structured case review and feedback
  • practical procedural training
  • a collaborative, family-centered hospital culture
  • a clear long-term pathway into an Associate Veterinarian role at EVCOT

This program may be especially attractive to new graduates who want advanced emergency training in a highly supportive environment while also building a long-term career within a privately owned emergency hospital.

Program Structure

The mentorship program is structured over 3 years and is designed to provide both breadth and depth of emergency training while gradually increasing autonomy and responsibility.

Core training includes:

  • 50% Overnight ER — high-acuity emergency stabilization and decision-making
  • 25% Swing Shift ER — high case volume exposure and triage workflow
  • 25% ICU / Critical Care — deeper mentorship, case rounds, and critical patient management

The first year emphasizes intensive training, supervision, and skill-building. The following two years continue to build on that foundation while transitioning the doctor into compensation and responsibilities aligned with the Associate Veterinarian role.

Mentorship Model

Each mentee is paired with an experienced ER doctor who provides structured mentorship and clinical support throughout the program. The mentorship model emphasizes progressive autonomy, case-based teaching, and practical emergency medicine training.

Mentorship components include:

  • weekly case review discussions
  • monthly emergency medicine rounds
  • direct shift mentorship with senior ER clinicians
  • procedural training sessions
  • ongoing clinical feedback

This is a highly collaborative environment where doctors work closely together to support patient care, medical decision-making, and professional growth.

Clinical Skills Developed During the Program

Doctors in the program will build confidence and experience in a wide range of emergency procedures and concepts, including:

  • FAST ultrasound (AFAST / TFAST)
  • thoracocentesis and abdominocentesis
  • urinary catheter placement and obstruction management
  • blood product administration and transfusion knowledge
  • critical patient stabilization and shock management
  • emergency anesthesia and sedation
  • CPR leadership and advanced life support protocols

The goal of the program is to help develop capable, confident ER clinicians who are comfortable managing a broad range of emergency presentations and critical patients.
