Development & Marketing Intern

Brooklyn Music School provides a variety of accessible performing arts programming in the Fort Greene neighborhood.  We are looking for a welcoming, creative, and eager intern to join our team for the summer of 2026.

Interns will have a strong interest in development, grant writing, nonprofit management/public administration, and nonprofit marketing. Knowledge of music and performing arts is a plus, but not required.  

Interns will report directly to the Director of Development and Marketing, and interface periodically with the Internship Coordinator. We are looking for an individual:

  • Who is enthusiastic to learn more about development and fundraising, nonprofit management, and how marketing and development closely work together.
  • Who is punctual, professional, and curious, with a desire to pursue a career in the nonprofit or philanthropic sectors
  • Who meets deadlines and works collaboratively

Program Goals for Interns:

  • Learn the basics of grant writing and solicitations
  • Aid in nonprofit marketing projects 
  • Develop an understanding of grant cycles 
  • Building an understanding of how to build and maintain relationships with funders, including foundations and individuals
  • Identify and present an organization’s eligibility for grant applications
  • Partake in research helpful to the organization

Intern Responsibilities

  • Maintaining files using Google Drive
  • Compile required materials for grants and identify deadlines
  • Assist with mailings, filing, and record-keeping as needed
  • Send thank yous, receipts, and other donor notes
  • Attend various check-ins with the internship coordinator and other interns
  • Attend the Midway Check-in Meeting with the Internship Coordinator 
  • Attend Exit Interview 
  • Participate in all training programs required by New York State and New York City law, including Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Sexual Harassment training.
  • Follow all guidelines outlined in the BMS Employee Handbook.

Hours and Compensation:

  • This is an in person position in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. 
  • Interns are permitted to work up to 16 hours a week from  June 15th - August 14th, 2026
  • Compensation: $17/hour
  • Attend Orientation and Training, date(s) TBD
