About the Role
We are seeking a part time, 20 hours a week Research Intern focused on social listening to help identify, track, and synthesize emerging narratives around major social and political issues in the United States—such as threats to democracy, the climate crisis, racial justice, and economic inequality. This is an excellent opportunity for young researchers interested in careers at the intersection of data, AI, and media. The role is ideal for someone who lives online, understands how discourse spreads across platforms, and can quickly turn raw observations into clear, actionable insights. This could evolve into a longer-term role, depending on performance and organizational needs.
You will be responsible for manually monitoring social platforms to surface viral content, emerging trends, and under-the-radar narratives that are gaining traction, and distilling those findings into concise briefs on short timelines (often 1–2 days). In addition, you will support structured data management efforts by systematically organizing, labeling, and coding large volumes of qualitative content to ensure clarity, consistency, and high data quality across research outputs. Projects related to this role will initially run through June with the potential to extend.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct daily manual social listening across platforms including Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X (Twitter), and YouTube
- Manage and update growing datasets of social media content, internal documentation, literature reviews, and project scopes, ensuring strong organization, consistency, and overall data quality
- Apply qualitative coding best practices to systematically label, categorize, and segment documents within large datasets, ensuring rigor and consistency
- Leverage internal and external AI tools to enhance data quality, strengthen analytical insights, and improve operational workflows
- Synthesize large volumes of qualitative information into clear, structured insights and written briefs, contributing to rapid-turnaround research products (e.g., memos, briefs) under tight deadlines
- Identify viral moments, emerging narratives, key influencers, and shifts in both mainstream and fringe online discourse, surfacing early signals and under-the-radar trends related to major social and political issues
- Collaborate remotely with team members using Slack and Google Workspace (GMeet, Docs, Sheets, Slides)
Required Qualifications
- Deep familiarity with major social media platforms (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X, YouTube), including platform-specific cultures, formats, and trends
- Strong familiarity with leading AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude) and the ability to apply them effectively to research, analysis, and workflow optimization
- Proficiency in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides) and Microsoft Excel for data organization, analysis, and reporting
- Strong analytical and synthesis skills; ability to quickly turn observations into coherent narratives
- Excellent written communication skills, with attention to clarity and concision
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment and manage time effectively
- Comfort working on fast timelines and producing high-quality work under pressure
- Interest in U.S. politics, media, culture, and major social issues
Preferred Qualifications
- Current or recent student in Media Studies, Communications, Political Science, Sociology, American Studies, or another liberal arts or social science field
- Prior experience with social listening, media analysis, research, or journalism (academic or professional)
- Availability to work full-time
