Actuarial Intern

INTERN – ACTUARIAL SERVICES

Status:                 Non Exempt
Reports to:          Actuarial Supervisor

Department:     Actuarial Services

 

Overview

 

Under the supervision of the Actuarial Supervisor, the Actuarial Intern will support the Actuarial Services team by performing analysis for designated business segments to assist in ratemaking, reporting, and competitor research. You will focus on learning how your department and our organization runs, and can anticipate gaining valuable insight to help you in your future career. 

Learning Objectives and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform rate reviews by state and line of business, including rate indications, disruption analyses, and state filing exhibits
  • Perform analyses of loss reserve adequacy
  • Research competitor pricing and product changes, as well as competitor growth and profitability trends
  • Investigate specific questions posed by management, e.g. how the mix of business is shifting by state, why a book of business is deteriorating, or how changes in case reserving are impacting results
  • Build clear and comprehensive dashboard reports that visually convey growth and profitability trends
  • Document methodologies and findings for senior management in a manner under stable to a non-actuarial audience
  • Keep current on industry and company developments
  • Perform related work as required

Projects/Opportunities

  • Complete a rate indication analysis for a major state and line of business, including data preparation, trend analysis, and loss development.
    • Analyze historical premium, loss, and exposure data to identify drivers of rate level changes.
  • Participate in mid-year reserving analysis for all lines of business, including evaluation of loss development patterns and reserve adequacy.

 

Desired Qualifications and Skills

  • High school degree or equivalent; must be enrolled in an accredited university/college program
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Energetic and willing to be part of the team
