Position Summary & Responsibilities:

Location: Kansas Department of Agriculture Laboratory - Manhattan, Kansas

This position will remain posted until filled.

  • Analyze animal feed regulatory samples for label guarantees and vegetation/soil samples for pesticide residues following standard operating procedures. Ensure that testing is completed within established turnaround times. 
  • Perform sample preparation, analysis, data analysis, preparation of reagents and solutions, and instrument system checks. Evaluate quality control data to ensure sample data is reliable prior to reporting. 
  • Utilize various laboratory instruments and materials including but not limited to ICP, LCMS, UPLC, GCMS, combustion analyzers, benchtop lab equipment, automated analyzers, acids/bases and solvents. Perform calibrations, maintenance and repairs on analytical instruments as needed. 
  • Document and record lab tasks performed according to the quality system requirements. Draft, review, or update standard operating procedures as needed. 
  • Participate in meetings and communicate professionally and courteously with KDA staff, courier services, and visitors. 
  • Maintain a clean, organized and safe laboratory environment through regular housekeeping duties including cleaning labware, equipment, work surfaces, sweeping and mopping. 
  • Follow established laboratory safety procedures and meet work standards and performance expectations
  • All work is performed in a controlled laboratory setting, with training provided. 

Qualifications:

  • Professionally minded individuals with at least four years of direct experience in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Agricultural or Life Sciences, or related. Candidates may also qualify through a combination of relevant education, work experience, training or certification.
  • At least one year of direct experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations. 
  • Ability to communicate with scientific professional staff. 
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions. 
  • Ability to maintain simple laboratory records. 
  • This position will be exposed to hazards present in every laboratory section. These hazards include biological (pathogens), chemical (acids, bases, gases), and physical (heat, sharp objects, noise) depending on which laboratory section this position enters. Many tasks assigned to this position will also require physical demands such as lifting heavy objects, handling dusty or dirty items and standing for extended periods of time. 
  • Employee must have a valid Class C (or higher) Kansas driver’s license or equivalent license from another state. Employee is responsible to maintain an acceptable driving record to safely drive state vehicle and be willing and able to fulfill all job-related travel normally associated with this position.

Preferred Qualifications (Not required):

  • Knowledge of bench chemistry techniques and analytical chemistry instruments such as LC, GC, and ICP with various detectors. 
  • Experience and/or knowledge of method development, validation, or verification.
