Sleepaway Camp Director – Camp Conowingo

Join Girl Scouts of Central Maryland as the Camp Director at Camp Conowingo, a 600-acre overnight camp located in Conowingo, Maryland. This role offers the opportunity to build community, inspire campers and staff, and oversee a safe and engaging outdoor program.
Position Summary
The Camp Director is responsible for the overall on-site leadership and operation of camp. This role oversees all aspects of programming, staffing, scheduling, safety, and daily operations to ensure a high-quality, inclusive experience for campers and staff. The Camp Director serves as the primary on-site leader and decision-maker, providing direction to the administrative team and ensuring compliance with all organizational and regulatory standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide overall leadership and management of camp operations while living on-site for the season
- Supervise, train, and mentor camp staff to ensure strong performance and alignment with policies
- Oversee the administrative team to ensure smooth daily operations
- Enforce safety protocols, emergency procedures, and health standards
- Coordinate emergency response and serve as primary on-site decision-maker
- Address camper and staff concerns promptly and effectively, including conflict resolution
- Support staff in implementing appropriate behavior management strategies
- Communicate regularly with families regarding non-routine situations or concerns
- Maintain clear communication with staff, volunteers, and campers
- Conduct performance evaluations and support staff development
- Promote positive staff and camper morale through active involvement in the camp community
- Manage administrative tasks including recordkeeping, incident reports, and inventory
- Ensure compliance with state, local, and organizational licensing and accreditation standards
- Adapt to changing conditions and solve problems in a fast-paced environment
- Champion Girl Scout values and a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Assist with pre-camp training, post-camp cleanup, staff meetings, and end-of-season review
- Model exceptional customer service for campers, families, volunteers, and staff

Time Commitment
- Seasonal position requiring on-site residency for the duration of camp
- Includes paid pre-camp training and post-camp cleanup
- Staff receive scheduled daily time off and one day off per week
Requirements
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent management experience required
- Prior supervisory experience in a camp or youth program strongly preferred
- Knowledge of GSUSA, ACA, and Maryland camp standards preferred
- Experience working with children and adults in a leadership capacity
- Strong organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent verbal communication skills
- Current First Aid and CPR certification, or ability to obtain prior to camp
- Physical stamina to supervise campers during long, active workdays
- Ability to identify and respond to safety and environmental hazards
- Ability to pass background check, fingerprinting, and drug screening
- Valid driver’s license with clean driving record and ability to operate camp vehicles

Salary Description
$4,550 - $5,075 stipend for 7 week season
