Position Summary: The Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment provides strategic leadership for the systems that make Academic Excellence visible and consistent at the Academy. The Director ensures the alignment of PK–12 curriculum and standards, guides research-driven instructional practices, and builds equitable grading and assessment systems grounded in accuracy, transparency, and meaningful growth. The Director ensures every classroom reflects consistent, high-quality teaching and every student experiences appropriately challenging, relevant learning.
Specific Duties Include:
- Establish and lead Academy-wide curriculum (standards, materials, pacing, and outcomes) selection, implementation, and review cycles to maintain alignment across divisions and ensure learning progressions are grounded in cognitive science
- Develop and maintain vertically and horizontally aligned curriculum maps in all core disciplines, ensuring coherence in scope, sequence, and skills progression
- Ensure that specialized academic programs, including Transition, are intentionally aligned to the Academy’s PK–12 scope and sequence, learning progressions, and instructional expectations. While instructional materials, pacing, and supports may differ to meet student needs, all pathways reflect
- shared standards, outcomes, and cognitive rigor. The Director works in partnership with Transition leadership to maintain coherence across programs, ensuring access to grade-level learning while honoring the instructional design required for diverse learners.
- Define and operationalize Academy-wide expectations for rigorous instruction grounded in cognitive science and best practice (e.g., explicit instruction, modeling, retrieval practice, formative checks).
- Establish the Academy’s standardized assessment progression to ensure diagnostic, progress monitoring, and comprehensive learning targets are measured and utilized to inform decision-making and student support
- Lead the design and implementation of a coherent PK–12 grading and assessment system, including equitable grading practices, common assessments for benchmarking and calibration, and a standards-based approach in PK-3rd grades.
- Collaborate with divisional and departmental leadership to implement consistent instructional routines that are age-appropriate and subject-specific, as scientifically supported by research
- Collaborate with divisional and departmental leadership to support teachers through coaching cycles, walkthroughs, and feedback structures.
- Partner with the Vice President for Academics and Student Life and divisional leadership to lead and coordinate the school’s professional development programming, providing ongoing learning opportunities that promote best practices, educational research, and future-ready instruction.
- Monitor trends and emerging tools in educational innovation, including artificial intelligence, data-informed instruction, personalized learning, and global competencies.
- Partner with the Technology and Library/Media teams to foster digital citizenship, meaningful technology integration, and access to diverse learning tools.
- Collaborate with DEIB and student support teams to ensure academic programs are inclusive, equitable, and accessible to a range of learners.
- Represent the school at conferences, workshops, and consortia focused on learning innovation and educational leadership.
- Serve on academic committees or working groups as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills:
- Deep expertise in curriculum design, mapping, and standards alignment (PK–12 preferred)
- Strong knowledge of research-based instructional pedagogical practices, Adult Learning Theory, and emerging educational technologies
- Assessment literacy (formative/summative systems, common assessments, data-driven instruction, progress monitoring)
- Systems thinking: can build tools, routines, and structures that sustain improvement over time
- Proven ability to lead cross-division initiatives with clarity, empathy, and accountability, as an exceptional collaborator and facilitator
- Strong written communication—able to translate academic systems into clear messaging for families and stakeholders
Minimum Job Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field required; Master’s or Doctorate degree in Curriculum & Instruction, Educational Leadership, or related field strongly preferred.
- At least 5 years of classroom teaching experience; experience with multiple age groups and subjects strongly preferred.
- 5+ years of experience in curriculum/instruction leadership, including successful implementation of curriculum alignment and instructional improvement initiatives
- Experience leading professional learning and/or instructional coaching models
- Familiarity with independent school environments and commitment to holistic, mission-driven education.
The Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment position is an exempt 12-month position.
