Staff Accountant

Job Summary: 

The Staff Accountant plays a critical role in supporting the financial operations of the manufacturing facility. Reporting to the Plant Controller, this role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, supporting GAAP-compliant reporting, and contributing to effective internal controls. The position partners closely with plant operations and cross-functional teams to manage cost and inventory accounting, support budgeting and forecasting, monitor cash flow, and provide financial insight that supports operational performance and strategic decision-making.

 

Responsibilities:

Financial Management and Reporting

  • Prepare and maintain the Profit and Loss Statement and Balance Sheet schedules, ensuring accuracy and timeliness for review by the Plant Controller.
  • Contribute to strategic financial planning, including budgeting for international projects and multi-currency forecasting.
  • Maintain revenue recognition and COGS recognition in compliance with GAAP and internal policies.
  • Direct contributor of the Accounting period-end close process, including preparation of journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations, subject to review and approval by the Plant Controller.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports and supporting schedules; support the Plant Controller in presenting results to management and external stakeholders.

Cashflow and Banking

  • Monitor daily, weekly, and monthly cash flow forecasting for project-based revenues, incorporating fabrication milestones, and vendor financing for suppliers
  • Collaborate with the AP department in drafting vendor payments and verifying that all approvals and safeguards are in place.
  • Escalate large or unusual payments to the Plant Controller.
  • Maintain inter-bank account transfers to align with cashflow needs. 

Tax and Compliance

  • Prepare and file, sales and use, and property tax returns accurately and on time, ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and local tax regulations.
  • Facilitate the gathering and preparation of all documentation required for successful internal and external audits, ensuring compliance with regulatory and company standards.
  • Support compliance with GAAP and company policies, maintaining robust internal controls for financial accuracy.

Inventory and Cost Accounting

  • Budgeting & Forecasting: Using historical cost data and future projections to develop accurate budgets, forecast expenses, and plan for growth.
  • Variance Analysis: Comparing actual costs against budgeted or standard costs to measure operational efficiency and investigate the reasons for any discrepancies.
  • Cost Analysis: Examining cost data to understand cost drivers, identify trends, find inefficiencies or waste, and pinpoint areas for improvement.
  • Inventory Valuation: Properly calculating the cost of raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished goods inventory for accurate financial reporting on the balance sheet.
  • Collaborate with plant operations to strengthen inventory controls and cost tracking.

Internal Controls and Process Improvement

  • Collaborate with the Plant Controller to develop, implement, and maintain robust internal controls over accounting processes.
  • Identify and drive process improvements to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and compliance.
  • Ensure adherence to corporate policies, GAAP standards, and best practices.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Monitor and support the enforcement of budget compliance for all procurement activities and purchase requisitions.
  • Facilitate the requisition approval process by confirming available funding and correcting cost-center coding.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: Ideally requires 2 years of progressive accounting experience in a manufacturing or light industrial environment
  • Certifications: Candidates with a CPA, CMA, or with a desire to pursue licensure are encouraged to apply
  • Education: A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.  
  • Developing an understanding of manufacturing cost accounting, inventory management, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Typically requires experience in utilizing Google Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, Customer Relationship Management (CRM), and Accounting software applications
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Strong self-leadership and communication skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally and with international teams.
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Language proficiency in Spanish is advantageous but not required.
