Parks and Recreation Internship

General Purpose 

This is an hourly, seasonal (no benefits), and non-exempt position within the Village. Employees in this position may work up to 40 hours per week on a limited and seasonal basis. Employees in this position will receive experience in various elements of the Parks and Recreation Department including, but not limited to, recreation administration, facility operations, activity programming, special events development and implementation, and front desk management.  

Supervision Received 

This position works under the general guidance and direction of the Parks and Recreation Director.  This position may also work on projects managed by the Program Manager, Facility Manager, or Program and Engagement Manager.   

Supervision Exercised 

None. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities  

  1. Assist with the planning and implementation of various recreation programs and activities.  
  2. Assist with facility operations including front desk management, client services, and the proper storage of equipment. 
  3. Assist with project and special event development and implementation.  
  4. Work professionally and cooperatively with participants, fellow employees, and Parks and Recreation stakeholders. 
  5. Communicate with Parks and Recreation Director regarding required academic needs and projects. 
  6. Constructively participate in staff meetings and training events. 

 Minimum Qualifications 

  • Candidates must be in pursuit of a degree in Parks and Recreation Management, Sports Management, Leisure Studies, or related area field from an accredited university.   
  • Strong leadership and communication skills. 
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license. 
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from assigned worksites and events. 
  • Current Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid Certification or the ability to obtain certification within thirty (30) days of hiring. 

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities  

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. 
  • Ability to effectively meet and work with the public. 
  • Ability to make decisions in accordance with established department rules and Village ordinances, regulations, and policies.  
  • Ability to follow written or verbal instruction accurately and precisely.  
  • Working knowledge of computers and electronic data processing.  
  • Ability to handle stressful situations.  

 Tools and Equipment Used 

This employee will be expected to use standard office equipment including, but not limited to, phone systems; personal computers; multipurpose scanner copy-fax-scanner machine; and various sports equipment. 

 Physical Demands 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to communicate and listen. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and sit.  

The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
