Overview  

The Communications Intern is responsible for supporting Keep Tahoe Blue’s efforts to inform and engage the community through digital media, public outreach, and storytelling. This position is part of the Communications Team and will assist in sharing Keep Tahoe Blue’s mission, programs, and impacts with the public. The ideal candidate is a undergraduate student or recent graduate, strong writer, creative thinker, adept photographer/videographer, and passionate about environmental conservation.    

The position reports to the Communications & Marketing Project Manager.  

Keep Tahoe Blue is the donor-funded, science-based organization of environmental experts and Tahoe-lovers who have led the protection and restoration of the Lake Tahoe Basin since 1957. Essential Functions/Principal Responsibilities  

Assist in creating content for Keep Tahoe Blue’s social media platforms, websites, and email newsletters. 

Support the drafting and editing of press releases, blog posts, and other written materials. 

Attend events on behalf of Keep Tahoe Blue to gather information, capture photos and videos, interact with the news media, conduct interviews, and draft long form content. 

Assist with promoting public events and outreach campaigns. 

Contribute to graphic design and multimedia projects as needed. 

Conduct research on environmental topics and audience engagement strategies. 

Support Keep Tahoe Blue’s brand consistency across digital and print platforms. 

Assist is marketing efforts, both for our brand and line of merchandise. 

Complete an internship project that encapsulates and reflects the experience gathered and the work completed during the term. Present the project during an in-person symposium with Keep Tahoe Blue staff and collaborator groups and agencies. 

 

Other Duties  

Attend meetings and activities as requested by the Supervisor. 

Assist with event logistics and coordination. 

Collaborate with colleagues in other departments, including Community Programs, Strategic Partnerships, Policy, and Natural Resources. 

Assist in creating marketing materials, including signage, flyers, and digital media kits. 

Communicate with members of the news media. 

Other duties as assigned. 

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities  

An interest in environmental conservation and Keep Tahoe Blue’s mission to protect, restore, and advocate for the ecosystem health and scenic beauty of Lake Tahoe. 

Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills. 

Familiarity with social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, TikTok, etc.). 

Experience with Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar design tools. 

Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills. 

Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 

Occasional work on weekends and evenings. 

Excellent communication and time management skills. 

The chosen candidate must be able to dependably get around the Lake Tahoe Basin at all reasonable hours and in all reasonable weather conditions and when public transportation is not available. Keep Tahoe Blue does not provide a vehicle or other forms of transportation. 

 

Preferred Qualifications  

Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Communications, Journalism, Environmental Studies, Marketing, Anthropology, or a related field. 

Experience with photography, videography, and video editing software is a plus. 

Bilingual (Spanish) preferred but not required. 

 

Pay, Hours and Time Requirements 

Expected Pay: $20 per hour.  

Schedule: Part Time 

Up to 248 total hours during the internship period (June 22-August 14). Flexible scheduling, not exceeding 31 hours per week.   

Potential for academic credit (depending on your institution, area of study, etc.).  

Employment duration: Temporary/seasonal Internship  

Start Date: 6/22/2026 

End Date: 8/14/2026
