POSITION SUMMARY: The Summer Camp Counselor is responsible for providing a safe, joyful and developmentally appropriate Camp program for all campers and their families. They will support experiences designed to fulfill student’s potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth, in accordance with all relevant legislation, policies and procedures. 

The Camp Counselor will be responsible for the safety and well-being (emotional and physical) of all children at camp. They must ensure the development and safety of these children in accordance with relevant federal, state, local, and company legislation and policies. The Summer Camp Counselor will be respectful of all children and parents/guardians and ensure that equipment and facilities are clean, safe and well maintained.

Implement, facilitate and contribute to developmentally and culturally appropriate programs for elementary school aged children, infused with joy.


 

  • Facilitate connection time with your campers through group activities, games, and more
  • Ensure that the physical, emotional, intellectual and social needs of children in the program are met and maintained
  • Establish routines and provide positive guidance for all camp participants, inclusive of a range of skills, abilities and/or age - including in the classrooms, outdoors, and during transitional times
  • Participate fully and enthusiastically in all camp program activities, both on and off campus, during project time and active play, indoors and outdoors
  • Provide both group and individual support to campers across diverse age groups, ability levels, and support needs - including in the classrooms, outdoors, and during transitional times
  • Collaborate with Summer Instructor staff to implement programming, supporting lesson implementation, materials preparation and student behavioral management. 

Supervise all Camp program participants to ensure their health and safety at all times in all locations of the program day:

  • Partner with fellow staff to implement and follow through on all student management frameworks, including discipline, restorative justice and positive reinforcement
  • Be familiar with and consistently implement all health, safety and emergency procedures
  • Continually assess and support camper engagement by monitoring group dynamics, as well as the needs of individual campers
  • Supervise and lead campers to ensure safety at all times during group settings, such as ceremonies, all-camp activities, snack and lunch
  • Be responsible for knowing the overall camp schedule as well as schedules of individual campers and ensuring campers are where they need to be at all times.

Practice clear and effective communication with all camp participants, including kids, staff, and members of the community:

  • Maintain a collaborative, professional and positive relationship with all members of the staff
  • When off campus, maintain a professional and positive relationship with vendors or other members of the community when representing the Camp program
  • Communicate clearly and consistently with fellow counselors as well as leadership when support or follow up is needed.
  • Set and maintain expectations with campers around health, safety, and behavior.


 

Provide exemplary customer service to each camper, family, and guardian at all times:

  • Enthusiastically greet all campers and guardians ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all
  • Follow all check-in/check-out procedures to ensure efficiency and accurate daily attendance
  • Communicate with families as needed about their camper’s experience


 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands must be met by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job successfully, with or without reasonable accommodations. 

  • Repetitive lifting and some carrying up to 60 lbs for a minimum distance of 10 feet
  • Typing, writing, reading
  • Seeing, hearing and speaking, both nearby and at a distance, in person and on the telephone
  • Use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects and controls such as those on learning toys and writing implements, classroom supplies and to operate equipment
  • Frequent sitting Sit on the floor or in a child sized chair for up to 8 hours per day 
  • Standing, walking, kneeling, squatting, bending over, running on a variety of surfaces and durations, up to 8 hours per day
  • Reach with hands and arms, grasp objects, push/pull file drawers of 10-50 points, twist the upper body, rotate the wrist, and use finger dexterity for writing and using the computer
  • Walk for a distance of 10 to 100 feet up to 6 hours per day 
  • Climb stairs 
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus

OTHER FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB 

  • Set up and clean up small group activities and lessons
  • Ensure equipment and the facility are clean, well maintained and safe at all times
  • Organize and distribute snacks and lunch, ensuring all food areas are hygienic and cleaned before and after food distribution. 
  • Provide first aid to camp participants as needed 
  • Maintain accident and incident reports 
  • Attend all staff meetings and training as scheduled by program leadership
  • Cleaning the bathrooms, including toilets, sinks and floors, if needed for messes that occur during the program day 
  • Clean staff kitchen after use
  • Refrain from using personal cell phone and other devices while on duty


 

PAY and PERKS

  • Hourly, seasonal non-exempt position
  • Pay ranges from $18.00-$23.00/hour. Exact salary is determined based on experience and Kids Connection program tenure.
  • Sick time available based on California labor requirements
  • Attend paid, in person training before camp begins to meet the team and camp community, train on policies and best practices, and set up camp space.
    • Training days will take place on site the week before camp begins. See below for exact dates.
  • Build your instructional and leadership skills under the guidance of camp leadership through frequent feedback and supplemental training throughout the summer
  • Camp tuition discounts available for children of Counselor staff.
  • Possible extension to year round positions at the discretion of the Director of Extended Day & Camps, based on performance and availability

LOGISTICS

  • Camps run Monday-Friday 7:30am - 6:00pm
    • Training during the week of June 8th, 2026
    • Camp runs from June 15th to August 28th, 2026
    • No Camp on June 19th or July 4th in observance of federal holidays
  • Counselor Staff Hours
    • Summer full-time and part-time hours available 
    • 5-8 hours / day, with a 30 - 60 min lunch break depending on shift length
    • Exact schedule will be determined by the camp supervisor on a week to week basis.



 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS 

Qualifications 

  • Must be at least 18 years old by June 1st, 2026
  • Exemplar interpersonal skills
  • Pediatric CPR certification required or obtained during onboarding
  • Current Lifescan and pass the licensing requirement with government authorities.
  • High school diploma (or GED) preferred, but not required
  • College coursework in Education or Child Development preferred, but not required
  • Work experience in a school, camp, or childcare preferred, but not required
  • Availability to work 5-8 hours shifts daily, Monday - Friday, for the duration of camp
  • Bilingual in English and another language is beneficial, but not required
  • Ability to balance multiple tasks with enthusiasm, handling changing priorities and practicing dynamic thinking including rapid decision making
  • Ability to complete all pre-camp onboarding tasks, including background checks, state-mandated certifications, electronic onboarding paperwork, and online training prior to the start of camp

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described above are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The essential functions of the job must be performed with or without reasonable accommodations. 

Work is performed with the presence of children the majority of the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. There may be a number of activities and situations happening at once, and the employee will have to supervise all children at all times. The employee may experience smells associated with children including those who are ill.
