Basic Job Functions:
Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.
Reporting to the Safety Manager of a multi-location, safety driven scrap metals recycling company, the Safety Trainee will work closely with the safety department to assist in the development, implementation, and management of best-in-class safety and security standard operating procedures as well as multi-dimensional training and awareness programs. Safety is at the core of who we are and we are looking for an enthusiastic and energetic leader to carry on our strong culture of safety.
- Conducts Contractor Safety Orientations for new contractors and sub-contractors
- Assists with the development of facility specific procedures (i.e., JHA’s, Hazard assessments, LOTO) as process are implemented
- Audits onsite contractors for safety and health compliance; follows up to correct deficiencies.
- Keeps Safety Engineers informed of safety items as they arise during the construction phase
- Promotes Near Miss and Incident reporting among the contractors on site, ensuring the lessons learned from these are shared appropriately and corrective actions completed.
- Works with plant core teams to investigate accidents and incidents.
- Prepares and presents monthly/annual training, and other monthly safety meeting topics.
- Develop, revise, and implement site-specific safety policies and safe work procedures.
- Performs air sampling and noise level testing as needed.
- Attends any meeting at the site that can’t be attended by a Safety Engineer.
- Enforces safety rules and helps develop good employee safety attitudes.
- Ensures all documentation and record-keeping is properly filled out and filled on site.
- Recommends company safety policy changes to corporate staff.
- Serves as first contact for OSHA or other safety regulators.
- Expect to travel frequently throughout region and outside of region.
- Expect to work outside in a highly industrial environment in extreme weather conditions.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree – Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or closely related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ability to communicate verbally and/or through written communication with all levels of personnel within the Company and with Federal, State and local safety regulators.
- Internship or experience in a Construction Safety Environment.
- Ability to organize daily tasks and to work in a self-directed environment with minimal supervision.
- Experience using personal computers in a work environment for spreadsheet and document presentation.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Bi-lingual speaking skills in English and Spanish strongly preferred.
