Urban Forestry Intern

URBAN FORESTRY INTERN

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Urban Forestry Intern assists with the Village’s urban forestry program including assessing trees and updating the tree inventory. This is a non-credited internship position limited to a maximum of 560 hours per year. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are representative of the work required for this position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Update the Village’s web-based tree inventory.
  • Conduct field work activities including tree identification, tree maintenance, and visual assessment of trees. 
  • Attend department, committee, and board meetings as needed.
  • Assist the Director of Parks, Recreation, and Forestry, with other facets of the urban forestry program and operations.

 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Pursuing a degree in urban forestry, forestry management, horticulture, park management, or related field.
  • Experience working in the urban forestry or horticulture field preferred.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Capable of frequently lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.

 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of urban tree inventories, tree identification, and hazard tree analysis.
  • Knowledge of GIS and ESRI mapping and tools.
  • Knowledge of urban forestry plan writing.
  • Able to perform manual labor for extended periods of time and work under varied environmental conditions.  
  • Able to complete assigned projects without detailed instructions and with minimum supervision.
  • Able to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Able to deal tactfully and effectively with the public.
  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Strong computer skills with the ability to learn and operate a variety of programs and websites used by the Village.
