Police Officer
Port of San Diego Harbor Police Department hiring Police Officers, Community Service Officers, and Dispatchers.
Minimum Requirements:
Police Officer (Trainee)
- 20 ½ years of age at time of application; 21 years of age at time of appointment. (There is no maximum age limit)
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States under Federal Law.
- Must possess a U.S. high school diploma, G.E.D. certificate or a diploma from an accredited institution.
- Valid California Class C driver's license or current military ID and out-of-state valid driver’s license.
- No felony convictions. Misdemeanors may be disqualifying depending on the number, type of violation, and date of the violation (regardless of whether it has been expunged or sealed).
- Must be in good physical condition and free from any medical conditions that would interfere with the responsibilities of a Police Officer.
Community Service Officer
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, and one year of work experience involving public contact that requires exercising tact and diplomacy. Time served as a District Intern will count towards the years of experience.
- A current, valid California Class C driver's license at time of appointment and maintained at all times thereafter in order to operate a vehicle on District business.
- Must successfully pass a complete background investigation to include a police records check, employment history, education history, polygraph examination, neighborhood check, and reference check.
- Must successfully pass a pre-employment physical examination, psychological examination, and drug screen.
- Upon employment, must be able to pass a background check in accordance with current Federal requirements to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). Must also successfully complete and pass P.O.S.T PC 832 Arrest course.
Dispatchers
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
- Two years of responsible clerical or law enforcement-related experience requiring public contact. Time served as a District Intern counts towards the years of experience.
- At least one year of operational experience in a public safety setting performing duties comparable to that of Public Safety Dispatcher is preferred but not required.
- Certain assignments may require a valid driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District's vehicle insurance program.
- Must successfully pass a complete background investigation to include a police records check, employment history, credit history, education history, polygraph examination, neighborhood check and reference check.
- Must successfully pass a pre-employment physical examination, psychological examination, and drug screen.
