Livestock Market Reporter

Location: Applicants must live in Central Kansas, preferably around Saline County, Kansas.
Position Summary & Responsibilities:
This is technical and public contact work in reporting the beef cattle market activity for the Kansas Department of Agriculture. An employee in this class provides the agricultural industry and the general public with accurate and unbiased market reports that depict the current supply, demand, prices, and trends affecting trade in livestock markets.
Work involves attending weekly livestock sales in person and publishing daily records of market activity, utilizing official United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) standards to grade livestock and record sales into an online database system. An experienced Agriculture Market Reporter provides initial training and supervision. This position travels to assigned weekly sales to collect data and prepare a report on the livestock market. Day travel and occasional overnight stays will be required. Occasional sale coverage on other days or in other livestock markets may be requested as needed.
This position will cover the cattle sale in Salina, Kansas, every Thursday, with occasional special sales throughout the week.

Qualifications:
- Professionally minded individuals with at least four years of direct experience related to agriculture, animal science, or any closely related fields is preferred. Candidates may also qualify through a combination of relevant education, work experience, training or certification.
- Good verbal and written skills are essential.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and collect data.
- Demonstrated experience of accurately inputting data into online computer systems.
- Employee must have a valid Class C (or higher) Kansas driver’s license or equivalent license from another state. Employee is responsible for maintaining an acceptable driving record and be willing and able to fulfill all job-related travel normally associated with this position.
