Law Clerk Internship - JD06000-9304

POSITION INFORMATION
 
POSITIONS  AVAILABLE : Unpaid law clerk positions for law students working with a trial judge in the 4^th Judicial District, Colorado Springs, CO from May 20, 2026 through July 17, 2026.

STATEMENT OF DUTIES
 
PROGRAM  DESCRIPTION : The program is designed to allow the law clerk to work approximately half of the week doing legal research and writing with an assigned judicial officer and the other half of the week observing trials and other contested hearings in the various courtrooms throughout the building.  The size of the program varies each summer, but we average 6 – 8 clerks per summer.  The law clerks meet weekly as a group with a district court judge for discussion and question/answer about various legal topics so that the students will understand what they are witnessing in court, such as Criminal Law and Procedure, Civil Law and Procedure, Domestic Law, Ethics, Jury Selection, and Alternate Dispute Resolution.  We also conduct weekly field trips or brown bag sessions designed to expose the students to the judicial system as a whole and to career networking opportunities, such as visiting the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court, visiting the offices of the District
Attorney, the Public Defender, the Department of Corrections, and more.  Students will need to arrange their own housing for the summer.

APPLICATION  INFORMATION : Applications are open to any law student who will have completed the first year of law school by spring of 2026.  Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until the program is full.  Admission into the program is subject to student passing a background check.  Applications may be submitted in the form of a letter of interest and a resume to 04SummerLawClerk@judicial.state.co.us.
