Summer Intern, Bioassays

The Position

The Bioassays Intern will support discovery research at Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals by contributing to a data-driven project aimed at improving the prediction of optimal cell lines for off-target assessment (OTA) screens. This internship will focus on building a comparative database linking RNA sequencing expression data with qPCR results to evaluate correlation and predictive value. The intern will gain hands-on experience in molecular biology techniques while working closely with scientists to generate data that may significantly accelerate bioassay timelines.

This is an 11-week Summer Internship Program paying $21.00 per hour and requires full-time, onsite work five days per week at the designated location.

Responsibilities

  • Perform RNA isolations using good laboratory techniques
  • Prepare cDNA libraries for downstream analysis.
  • Perform real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) assays.
  • Analyze and organize experimental data using Microsoft Excel.
  • Support cloning projects under the guidance of a research scientist.
  • Perform basic laboratory tasks including pipetting, solution preparation, and general bench work.
  • Present project updates in weekly group meetings.
  • Prepare final deliverables, including a scientific poster and a ~20-minute presentation summarizing project objectives, results, and learning.

Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited university or college and majoring in a scientific discipline such as Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, or Engineering.
  • Previous laboratory experience and familiarity with basic lab techniques.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including comfort presenting in group settings.
  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Willingness and ability to spend 75% of the workday walking the facility and 25% at a desk.

Preferred:

  • Prior laboratory experience, with emphasis on genetics or molecular biology.
  • Familiarity with qPCR, RNA isolation, or gene expression analysis.
  • Strong attention to detail and interest in data-driven biological research.
  • Curiosity, enthusiasm for discovery science, and willingness to learn new approaches and techniques.
