Attorney General of Montana

Hiring:

Summer 2026 Law Clerks

 

The Office of the Montana Solicitor General (“OSG”) and the Department of Justice Civil Bureau seek to hire law clerks for Summer 2026. As the chief appellate litigator for the State of Montana, the Solicitor General oversees the State’s appellate litigation, with particular focus on the United States Supreme Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. The Solicitor General also oversees the State’s offensive federal litigation against overreaching federal administration policies, as well as the State’s defense of federal constitutional challenges to Montana state law.  The Department of Justice Civil Bureau is responsible for defending the constitutionality of Montana’s laws in state trial court and at the Montana Supreme Court. 

 

Responsibilities:

 

The Montana DOJ Summer Law Clerk Program offers talented law students the opportunity to gain substantive experience unparalleled in private practice and other government agencies.  Summer Law Clerks participate in all aspects of civil practice in the Attorney General’s Office.  Successful applicants can expect to:  

 

  • Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda for the Attorney General, the Solicitor General, and other senior staff.
  • Assist with briefs in the United States Supreme Court, the Montana Supreme Court, the Ninth Circuit, and other courts.
  • Assist attorneys in preparing for trial and oral argument
