About the Internship

Woodruff Scout Camp is seeking highly organized and communication-focused students pursuing Tourism Management, Outdoor Recreation, Adventure Education, Parks & Recreation, Hospitality, or Outdoor Leadership to serve as Adventure Zone Director Interns for the Whitewater Rafting and Horseback Riding programs.


 

This role is ideal for individuals who want hands-on experience managing complex logistics, customer communication, adventure tourism operations, and staff coordination. The AZ Director Intern acts as the central hub connecting campers, vendors, staff, transportation teams, and internal leadership—requiring exceptional organization, professionalism, and reliability.


 

Position Summary

The Adventure Zone Director Intern oversees all Whitewater Rafting and Horseback trips, ensuring safe, smooth, well-coordinated experiences. This position requires daily communication with:

• Rafting Vendor

• Horseback Riding Vendor

• Bus Company & Drivers

• Program Chief

• Food Service Team

• Camp Director

• AZ Staff Members

• Troop Leaders & Adult Advisors


 

Strong communication, excellent organization, and the ability to multitask under pressure are critical for success in this internship.


 

Major Responsibilities


 

Customer & Participant Coordination

• Provide clear, friendly communication to adult leaders and participants

• Answer questions about rafting and horseback trips

• Communicate schedules, expectations, and safety details

• Manage last-minute changes, medical considerations, and special requests


 

Vendor Communication

• Send accurate daily/weekly participant counts

• Confirm capacity, scheduling, and departure times

• Communicate special considerations or late additions

• Coordinate weather delays or safety changes


 

Cross-Camp Communication

• Communicate clearly and consistently with Program Chief and Food Team

• Update staff, bus drivers, and leadership on changes or delays


 

Bus & Transportation Logistics

• Create daily bus schedules for rafting & horseback trips

• Communicate bus times to Program Chief, Food Team, and staff

• Ensure accurate loading/unloading procedures

• Maintain rosters, manifests, and attendance records

• Notify leadership staff of early/late returns


 

Staff Scheduling & Leadership

• Assign staff to daily rafting and horseback trips

• Ensure staff are trained, prepared, and in correct locations

• Lead staff briefings and debriefs

• Support staff performance and enforce safety standards

• Provide coaching and guidance as needed


 

Food Team Coordination

• Coordinate early/late meals when necessary

• Update meal counts for accurate kitchen preparation


 

Training Leadership

• Deliver Raft Safety, emergency scenarios, and guiding practice

• Support horseback safety training and procedures

• Run team-building activities and reinforce AZ professionalism

• Lead scenario-based training for emergencies and communication protocols


 

Program Administration

• Track attendance, capacity, safety notes, and incident reports

• Update Program Chief and Camp Director on daily operations

• Keep detailed, organized documents and schedules

• Maintain accurate logs for each trip


 

Qualifications & Required Skills

• Pursuing a degree in Tourism, Outdoor Recreation, Adventure Education, Hospitality, Outdoor Leadership, or related field

• Excellent communication skills—verbal, written, and interpersonal

• Strong organizational skills—ability to track rosters, schedules, and logistics

• Ability to multitask and remain calm under pressure

• Comfortable coordinating among multiple departments and vendors

• Confident leading teams and giving instructions

• Comfortable working outdoors in dynamic environments

• First Aid/CPR preferred (training available at camp)

• Positive, friendly, professional demeanor


 

General Camp Responsibilities

• Dining hall serving rotations

• Bathhouse/campsite cleanup

• Flag ceremonies

• Campfire programs

• Evening activities and weekend operations


 

Work Environment

This is a fast-paced, coordination-heavy outdoor leadership position involving river sites, stables, bus loading zones, and on-camp administrative offices. Must be comfortable working outdoors, managing people, and communicating with multiple groups.
